orm09
I remember reading on here that you can use a cav/calibra turbo friction plate for a redtop conversion. Is this right as I need a clutch so I can drop the engine in my gte hatch.Any info appreciated.

rutts
if you use the turbo clutch plate when it is half worn the side that goes against the flywheel the springs start to rub on the flywheel bolts so i would not use one again, i have a GTE heavy duty spinner plate with the 16v cover. it works fine for me. orm09
thanks, think I'll go with the gte plate.Do you know of a good supplier for these?
mickappy
id go for turbo plate with the turbo fly wheel and turbo pressure plate.. or turbo plate witk xe flywheel and xe pressure plate. im using the latter. good for lots a power:)
biffy1984
Are the splines on a turbo clutch plate not different?
mickappy
no, its the xe plate thats different, the c20let uses the f28 gearbox which has the same spline as the getrag box... luckily for us:)
Blockhead
Hmmm, how long did the turbo plate take to wear down to half way? It looks as though the Carlton 2.2 plate is the same as the Manta GTE plate (at least it is going by size 203mm for 14spline) - how much worse is the 200mm 1.8 clutch plate on a standard XE? mickappy
u wont have any rubbing if you use the right flywheel, i put a 1800 plate on my xe, it lasted 300yards before slipping. dont do it mate!!! pain in the arse to change...
Blockhead
i put a 1800 plate on my xe, it lasted 300yards before slipping. Ah, don't like the sound of that, only reason for considering it is that I have a new clutch that came with the car and a few project threads etc. say to use them. Isn't strickly an XE I'll be fitting, is actually a 20SEH but will be similar power to a standard XE and I'd assume the flywheel will be about the same.. How come it slipped for you? Was it purely lack of grip or lack of grip because they are too thin or something?
mickappy
some peaple have used 1800 plate in there xe`s, mine slipped b4 end of road tho. and it was brand new. the turbo plate i have in now is 228mm covers lots more surface and im sure the pressure plate from the turbo helps too. heres is what id use it u want a nice smooth ride.. turbo plate with pot type flywheel and pressure plate to match. if you want to go light use the xe flywheel with turbo plate but use the xe pressure plate.... about 4kg lighter.... also id check to see if the seh has the same studd pattern as xe.. if not all this is bollox
Blockhead
Yeah will help if the cover plate will fit the flywheel Got all the head etc off at the moment and when I get the gasket and bolts tomorrow I'll be lifting it out so will be able to see what's what. I want to keep the current flywheel (aledgedly lightened & ballanced) so was hoping the new clutch inside was 14 spline.... until I found the upgraded F18 gearbox that's 24 spline Ah well, cheers for the info - I'll find out what I can do in a day or 2. orm09
Just been checking and according to info from clutch suppliers the 2.2 plate is 228mm so may be as strong as the turbo one without the chance of rubbing on the flywheel bolts. biffy1984
My 20SEH flywheel has a 225mm face. When I fitted a 228mm plate I had to take a couple of mm off the diameter of the clutch plate with a flappy disc on a grinder. Works spot on with the standard XE cover. The XE cover will bolt onto an SEH flywheel no probs. Standard 1.8 plate is too small if you're going to drive it hard.
orm09
I found a place in Leeds that rebuilt the 16v cover and built me a 228mm 14 spline plate to suit and they did it in twenty minutes while I waited. They're called clutch specialists and are on Jack lane in Hunslet.their phone no is 01132426359.
