hey guys, my 87 exclusive has the standard 2.0L i in at the moment and it runs sweet, but i cant help thinking that alot of its horses have wandered off over the years, because there are a few classics around mine that seem to dominate me on the straights of our local B road. i'm not looking to change the engine at the moment but i might put a new lump in it in the near future, i was just wondering what my options are? a couple of lads have recomended 16v redtops, and i lurv the 3.0 v6 in my mates capri, any help would be great cheers.

if you like the v6 sound go for the v6 vectra/omega its just as much bhp but shed loads of more torque than a red top. its a bit more difficult to fit than a red top but if you can find the cash for a programable ecu go that route. if not get in contact with mantaray i think he knows how to rewire the ecu wires to get rid of the immobilizer.

Except I don't think the rover V8 people have to move the rack on a B and the Vauxhall V6 people seem to.................

Should point out V6 Vauxhall seems painful to fit where as Vauxhall family II (Redtop, Ecotec etc) is very simple.

And if you have to pay someone to do it simple means cheaper.

Do you read practical performance car magazine? They`ve fitted a saab 2.3 turbo engine into a escort so you can do it to a manta.

Im currently fitting one into my mk1 astra and then later on a highly tuned one will be going into my chevette.

!993-98 saab is gm bolt pattern so the manta 1800/carlton/omega box fits straight on.Hardest part is fabricating acouple of engine mounts and modding the sump.

Ive just picked up a saab to use as a donor car,£200 with 225bhp as standard.A £360 remap will take it to over 300bhp.

Really cant see why people are still using xe`s/lets/v6`s/v8`s when these engines are available cheap, are reliable and are cheap to tune.

They're only cheap as people aren't using them!

Once they take your advice you won't be able to afford one ffor the Chevette lol

People said that about xe` when they first started to get used, yet theres still plenty about.

Although ive been watching the prices on ebay ect for awhile while ive been researching the ins and outs of it all,and i do think prices have already got alittle higher.

Still its more bang for buck than just about anything else id say at the mo.

VERY good point, lots of power for not a lot of money. XE is the easiest, still think V8,s are the best (500 bhp in a Manta is quicker than an R1, i know) however, it's faaaaaaaaaaaaar from cheap. Imho, Rovers are best not used though! Same amount of work as an American V8 and much less power. The only thing have going for them is they're light but if you place a Chevy in the correct position (that also requires no beam cutting or steering rack moving), that advantage is gone.

Saab would be the best budget BHP way to go i reckon too, well pointed out gareth.

I have a feeling this thread may run on a bit with peoples differing views.

The Saab route is what I've been going on about on here for quite a few months now.

Yes the v8 route is better going down the Ford route, but if you REALLY want some ooooommmmffff, then see if you can find an Alpha V10 !!!!!!! Very rare, but well worth it just for the sound !!;)
