Off subject I know. but just had a quote from Evans Halshaw in Chester for £400.00 all incl to replace the cambelt on an 02 1.6 Focus.

Does this sound about right or not?

Roll on "summer" so I can get the Manta out, I think I paid about £10.00 for the belt and did the job myself on that.

that sounds a heck of a lot to me - look for independant Ford specialist or a member of the Good Garage Scheme - I got quotes for my Golf recently £ 400 VW against £280 independant check also if it includes changing the waterpump and tensioners as it is best to get these done at the same time :thumbup

Last focus i did was a year 2000 ,, 1.6 petrol,,, timing belt, tensioner pulley, new water pump and antifreeze came in at £265.00 ish.

From memory i think there was a choice of tensioners depending on engine code, but only a couple of pounds difference in price, the water pump is not driven off the timing belt but you have to remove the belt to replace pump so good practice to replace at the same time. The crankshaft pulley is not keyed to the crank but relies on being bloody tight (or should i say correctly torqued up ) to drive the cam belt properly, you need the correct timing pins to time the engine up properly if you decide to have a go yourself, readily available off e-bay, about £15.00 the set. Where abouts are you, might be able to sort something??, cheers John

£400 is about right if you get all the extras like johnboy has. Dont forget with the £400 you get original stuff & £260 you get motaquip or lucas parts.

Did this once to a car & the tensioner snapped off a few day later. Customer didnt have a leg to stand on as the motor factor said it was a faulty part or something.

Can not quite remember but if you pay the extra thats least likely to happen, It is very rare that does happen though...... In my experience anyway!

The £260.00 will be for a Gates belt and tensioner which 9 times out of 10 is what would be dealer fit anyway but in a Ford box.:thumbup I can get genuine Ford parts if preffered, won't be much dearer. If a failure of a new part occurs then the supplier should cover it and any associated damage under warranty or at least that is what my parts rep has told me.

Thanks for the responses guys, as people suggested changing the water pump at the same time.

Ford dealer has now quoted £70 to £200 for a water pump on top of the £400 for the cam belt job!

The way this is mounting up I think it may be cheaper to change the car!!

On ebay you can get

Ford Focus 1.4/1.6 16V Timing Cam Belt Kit & Water Pump for £63.99 or

1.4/1.6 focus cam belt kit for £43.00

On this occasion it is safe to say they will not be getting my custom.

Don't buy any old cambelt go for either fords own, or a GATES belt. Quinten and the like tend not to be too good.(Advice from an ex ford mechanic)

Cheers

Why once the timing belt is off does the Ford dealer quote between £70 and £200 on top of the original £400 for a water pump, it's only a 15 to 20 minute job extra once stripped, and don't they know how much a water pump is  they are the dealers after all, if i did a quote with a £130 either way kind of thing i dont think i would get any business either!!!!!

I asked for a breakdown of the costs and if the £400.00 included the water pump this is the reply:

"There isn’t a brake down on the price as it’s a set menu price, it would take around 2.5 hours to fit the cambelt kit and it doesn’t include the water pump. The water pumps vary from £70-£200 depending, technicians wouldn’t know which water pump until they have seen the vcl im afraid."
