Hey guys, thinking of selling the Manta. Ive had a think and its a bit too clean to use as a drift car, its by no means mint but my original plan was to get a welded up nail and thrash it. Its a 2 owner car with the original owner having it for most of its life until his death. I got it off the 2 owner. Its got 35000 on the clock now and ive no reason to suspect it isn't, the seats are a little grubby but they will come up clean with a wash. Car is Tax'd until March 2014 and MOT'd until July.

Car Specs:

1.8 Manta, runs excellent and goes better than I expected to be honest!

Lowered on H&R Springs and Koni Damper Adjustable shocks

GTE Alloys, I have two white GTE wheels on rear at the moment which will go with car as well

Polybush Prop Mounts

Welded Diff - Not to everyones taste but if someone shows enough interest and really doesn't want it ill try get it swapped over

Front Calipers appear brand new as well

Someone has cleaned off underneath and plainted black. Looks clean enough under there with no plates I can see bar the corner of the sill

Bad Bits:

Car is registered as a Cat C - Has had a slight knock on rear below the lamp. I missed it when viewing it, Josh picked up on it, it isn't major in my eyes but im not going to rip anyone off either

Has had small plate on sill near arch, solid enough but the looks though

Rear arches would need doing in a year or two Id imagine. They are scabby and I haven't touched them. I've seen ALOT worse.

Some scabs under rear lights - may get time to rub these down and paint before sale

Mark on N/S/R quarter nothing major but its there

Scuffs on corners of bumpers as you'd expect from an elderly person driving in and out of garage every day

I really don't want to sell it and id keep it if I had the space but I really want to get in to drifting and I don't want to ruin a nice tidy classic car.

£1100 ONO - South Wales

Have to say, the diff would be far from pleasant - my car has a welded-up diff and it really p1sses me off.

Having said that, rear axles are quite easily available, some for just fifty quid. I plan to change mine pretty soon now.

If it's just the diff that bothers you, get the car and throw in a different standard axle.

I'm not sure if the Cat C insurance record would be an issue or not. Does that affect insurance premiums on the car, or is it just about previous damage being recorded and potential car value to take that into account?

The actual damage described/listed against that car does not seem to be real worry. It does seem to be really clean and tidy otherwise.

Had pondered whether to get this for myself, then drop in a red top engine for a fun road car, but I really should concentrate on my competition car...

Most people won't touch a Cat C (or D), which is what pretty much any insurance company will give to a Manta if it's involved in an accident anything more than a cosmetic scrape. A bodyshop will not be able to replace much on a classic car so are nearly always write offs as a Manta doesn't really have a 'retail value' and unless you have a specialist insurance policy with agreed valuation, you won't get much either. A Cat C is a bit more worrying as it must have had a VIC test after it's repair or it can't be on the road (this car has tax, test and insurance on it now, so pretty confident it has passed one), will cost more to insure and most insurers wont insure a car previously written off. It's not an issue for me as it would mean the car is worth a lot less, so is cheaper to buy and my insurance company that I've been with for years and had about 6 different cars insured, will insure anything, the cover is crap but for cheap and legal, is perfect.

The axle is a bother, I'd have to drive from wherever it is in South Wales to where I live in South Bristol, it's not mega far but 2 motorways including a bridge crossing and some town driving with a partially locked diff, I personally feel is dangerous and I don't want to pay extra for recovery or for the privalidge of having it replaced but unless I want to pay an unrealistic £6,500 to some joker :D there are not many options about at the moment.

Thanks for insurance explanation.

As for driving with a locked diff, I don't think of it as dangerous. It is particularly horrid when manuevering the car as you have to force a rear wheel to slip whenever there is any steering lock on at all. That also makes the car want to push straight on. Ib most cases, that makes the car even more stable (which is a disadvantage when you want to make tight turns)

At higher speeds, it is much less of an issue - especially such as on a motorway, when you'd be hard pushed to notice the difference.

When travelling at any sort of speed (over 20mph) the different slip on the tyres is easier, and the turning circles involved tend to be much larger.. With some weight transfer, turning in a higher speed bend is easy enough, with the inside wheel slipping a small amount without you even noticing. It's once you slow down again, on tarmac, that it reminds you that you are forcing the tyres to act against their will!

There's certainly not a huge amount of choice if you are looking for a fun, clean Manta, at a reasonable price.

Thanks John, that's good, my concern would be the ease that you can loose traction on the back, the M4 has sooo many middle laners you have to do a lot of weaving about! :-D

This may have gone already but I'd still consider it for a grand if a replacement diff can be sourced, or maybe if I could get it delivered and give the seller a lift back... Then I'd have no choice but to re-join the club, yay! :-)

I find the problem is not being able to lose traction easily enough!

Hey, Bristol, Wales, M4 - that's not too difficult. If petrol costs covered (ouch), I could drive to Bristol, then you take me to pick up the car for you :-)

I still got it guys, ive noticed a tiny little hole in the bottom corner of the arch towards the back when washing it, nothing major and prob 1inch square plate will fix it! ill grab a pic. Axle is only an issue driving the thing round tight corners. Im trying to source a diff but ive not got much time on my hands lately and to be honest im playing around with my S14a too much so no interest in the Manta at the moment. If someone wants it as it is at the moment great, if not im going to tidy up the arches and other little bits, replace the diff and advertise at shows this year..

If you're up for selling it for £1000 with the axle as it is then I'd be a taker. Are you still insured on it by any chance, and would there be any possibility of you bringing it to Bristol please (when you're less busy of course) and I can give you a lift back home? I'm in Bishopsworth BS13 9QG. No probs if not. Thanks.

Yea I don't mind selling it as it is, im still insured but to be honest I really wont have the time to drive it down there anytime soon and if someone came with the cash id rather sell it face to face. If your worried about driving the car its fine on 90% of any journey, just don't expect to shuffle it into a Tesco car part spot quickly lol!

MINE :D

Well, deposit paid and will hopefully have it with me in the near future. Reminds me of a while back, when I've got all these plans for it in my head now and forgetting how much time, money and effort it takes to get it done. On the plus side there's someone selling diffs and other stuff in the parts for sale (which I can't see yet until I rejoin the club) but hopefully he'll have a 1.8 one left for me by the time I can view the advert (if anyone can see if the seller has any 1.8 diffs, that would be appreciated, can't have a 2.0 one really as it's higher ratio so will kill my 0-60!)

Hooray, it's here with me now. I'm very pleased with it and had a quick drive about, I'll start a project page soon with the work that it needs, although it'll be a while before I can spend too much on it (two ex-wives, a 1 year old daughter and near full credit card, you know the usual :D ). I just must get a new diff as soon as I can.

It was on the driveway for no less than 10 minutes and I hear a knock at the door and see a 1982 Capri outside, it's owner asking if the Manta was for sale. I had a chat with him for ages and he said I should get a steering lock for it as loads of theiving pikies have been stealing old cars, luckily with the locked diff, they'd have to do a 20 point turn to get it off the drive! I'll get a cover for it too as has the usual Manta leaks.

Although I hadn't driven a Manta for about two years now as soon as I lifted the clutch, everything felt just so naturally familiar, I didn't even notice the lack of power steering (and this has racing tyres!)..
