Manta B Rear Coilover

I'm running a modified Volvo axle and coil overs, went with 180lbs first, to soft for the track but I think ok for road use. Axle is set up to fit all manta mounting points.

I strengthened the top mount (where the shock would originally fit) and in mine I linked the cage to this point as well but I

use mine mainly for the track, i'm running 240 springs now.

Very important to reinforce that top mount

Sorry no coilovers for sale, brady I will try and load some pic's as its about time I learnt how to do it on here.

The axle is a Volvo 1041 locker diff. I'm running up front a TVR 4.0 V8 producing 224 BHP and I believe 225lb ft torque(print out has faded). To date the axle has handled the power with no issues and I've used it many times at Castle Combe (track days).

Just to confirm I have used the original top mount on the inner wing to mount the coilovers but the rest of the axle is linked via a custom 4 link set up plus adjustable panard rod

Think I've managed to work out how to post pic's so here goes,

Couple of pic's of the coilover in place

This next pic shows  the strength I put into the turret tops via the roll cage

and finally how the car looks once on the ground, the width of the axle incl wheel fits spot on under the arch

Good thing about coilovers is once you work out what shock you need you can change the spring easily to suit what ride you want including height

Thanks bris jas. Great photos, ta! Nice lookin car, colour really suits it. Very interested in more info regarding volvo axle fitment. Prop shaft, and what other modification where needed to both car and axle. Guessing by the wheel width, axle is fit a 400r. With nice wide revolutions. 5 stud, did you use commodore up front?

Sorry for the late reply, been away! Thanks for the comments on the car brady.

Let me know what you need to know and i'll sort the info, as for the stud pattern up front I got Tim from TJM motorsport to make up some front hubs with the same pcd of the rear Volvo axle so no issue getting wheels.

I guess the axle would work well on a 400r but I haven't done one yet so can't confirm, I think from memory its only 25mm wider than the original, best check if that could be an issue.

Prop is single piece made from a company in the Midlands, found them on line.

Any chance of showing the link arrangement? Looks like you have the top links mounted to the cage??!! Looks a neat job, will be linking my coupe (eventually!!) but not sure where the front mounts will be. Always better to ask someone who has a working example!!

Cheers

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok managed to take some pic's today,

The set up is 5 link, so 4 links from axle to body and the panard rod, think you can buy the 4 link kit which they fit to the escorts (sorry shouldn't swear!) Mine was fabricated by the guy that fitted it for me.

IMG_1033_zpsynhtm12z.jpg

The brackets from the Volvo axle were removed and these were fitted, so at the front of the axle the upper and lower arms go into boxes welded into the car and the rear of the bracket mounts the coilovers and on the o/s the panard rod.

IMG_1030_zpsfqodrroj.jpg

The boxes are welded into the car on the outside of the chassis rails and as the next pic shows are also attached to the roll cage. As I use the car on the road we rose jointed the axle end but poly bushed the body end of the link arms, this helps in reducing the road noise.

As mentioned before the prop is single piece so goes straight front axle to gearbox. The links stop the front of the axle dropping as on the original manta axle you have the torque tube which is mounted as well as the axle.

You only use the top mounts for the coilovers and the bracket for the panard rod from the original manta set up.

Think I've covered most points if you need anymore info let me know.

Jason,

Thanks for the pics, think theres enough info there. I was interested to see where the top mounts where positioned. It did look like the link bars were located outside of the chassis legs. Whats the clearance like for the wheels/tyres?

Cheers

Chris
