Spline Theory - Who Knew?

I need a new wheel stud for the Commodore axle m12 x 1.5 x 51mm long.

Plenty on eBay but what’s the spline size?

Most appear to be 13.1mm or 14.3mm. If i put a 13mm drill bit through the splined hole it rattles around with loads of play so I don’t think 13.1mm is the answer and a 14mm bit completely covers the splines so it’s not 14.3mm either 🤷‍♂️

Perhaps there’s a odd way to measure spline diameter?

Do I measure the major diameter (i.e. into the splines) or the minor diameter (peak to peak)?

Stabbing around on google I found “Spline Theory” and now i’m completely lost. There are numerous ways depending on the type of splines and whether there are an odd or even number.

If anyone knows the answer how to measure splines or better still what size I need i’d be most grateful to hear it.

Don’t say measure the old one as I had to drill it out and it now resembles fragments of shrapnel!
