Yellow headlamps

Hi there

Can anyone here point me in the right direction for a set of yellow headlamps for a Manta A Series please?

I've always thought they're a nice 60s/70s thing and believe they'll look great on the Manta...

As ever, all help very gratefully received.

LS 😊

Yellow headlights were only used in France but since 1993 they use also the EU rules and all have white headlights. So I think you will have problems using them when (some) of the police officers notice them. But on the oldtimermarket they are available:

Great link - thank you Herman.

I will check with MoT chap before fitting.

Until recently, I had a car from France that had yellow lights and they just seem to look right 🙂

Did it pass MOT ok. Why was it introduced? lights too bright maybe?

We could do with re introducing it for some. I do honestly think maybe drivers eye sight is the issue, that's why they have a million watt bulbs.

I thought yellow film was applied back when.

France introdused this rule before the war (1937), one of the speculations is cause they could identify foreign vehicles at night when Germany wanted to invade France.

My son his Nissan Sunny coupé had factory yellow foglights, was never a problem at Belgian MOT:

I've had two different cars with yellow headlamps. The first (that came from France) had yellow in the lens glass.

The second had yellow bulbs, similar to those in the link from Herman.

Both passed multiple MoTs.

Maybe the testers were happy with them because of the age of the cars (a '71 and a '72) , so I'm hoping the same is true of the Manta ('73)

Will report back once I've checked...

Sorry for boring history lesson!

I'm off to get some yellow bulbs...

From MoT test requirements listed on Gov.co.uk:

4.1.4. Compliance with requirements

You must inspect all ‘mandatory’ headlamps fitted.

Mandatory headlamps consist of a matched pair of main beam headlamps and a matched pair of dipped-beam headlamps. These can be separate or a single pair of headlamps.

Lamps are matched if they:

  • emit light of substantially the same colour and intensity
  • are the same size and shape that they are symmetrical to each other

Vehicles first used before 1 January 1931 do not need headlamps.

Buses first used before 1 October 1969 only need one headlamp. If 2 are fitted, neither the main beam or dipped beams need to form matched pair.

The colour of the light headlamps emit must be one of the following:

  • white
  • predominantly white with blue tinge
  • yellow

In a four-headlamp system the outer headlamps do not need to emit the same colour light as the inner pair.

Great work, i have a few square manta B headlights, I'm gonna play with.

1st pair. Totally original, restored to factory condition.

2nd pair, polished metal reflector, with brighter bulbs. Bulb unit tbc.

3rd pair, body coloured reflector painted with halogen lens fitted.

4. Twin headlights, but only outers fitted. I now have the option of inners being YELLOW. 👍
