opelman
Can anyone please advise as the correct oil to use in 5 speed GTE box ? There seems to be a lot of conflicting ideas out there, thanks
opelmantagsi
the specs are in the Haynes manual for the hypoid gear oils possible reason you will find conflicting ideas is maybe due to opinions, guys with rally and race backgrounds will possibly use auto transmission fluid and the likes for less drag. I use a lite fully synthetic oil used in modern trucks, mainly due to me having a free supplier and the fact that its so expensive to buy the real good stuff. The benifit I have found is very smooth gear changes. the down side is gearbox seals will need to be in very good condition if using lite fluids
monzta
The original from Opel is a SAE75W-85 API GL4. You can also use other oils, but it need to be 75W85 and fully synthetic oil on polyglycol based. This is important ! The getrag 240 boxes like yours has a very thin oil and its very touchy about this..
Kevin Abbott
As I remember the last I bought from GM was expensive as I had to go halves with a mate. The trade card may of made a big difference now. That's if it's still available. Need to ask Andy.
