Rob36
Hi all. The rad in my recently aquired Mk1 Cav 1900 Coupe looks past its best. Its holding water fine, but the fins are in a bit of a state and its probably not as efficient as it once was! At first look, prices for a replacement rad look pretty dear, so Im weighing up my options. Ive heard that early Carlton rads are the same and go straight in. Is this accurate? MANTAMAN
Think the rads are about the same size but i'm sure the mounting brackets are in different positions, anyone with a MK 1 Carlton Rad who can check?
mantadoc
What he said. Straps and bottom need swapping
bris jas
Just had my rad checked over, but all ok although the guy quoted me around £130.00 to put a 3 core in if he found it to be knackered. Seemed like a decent guy and very reliable, if you want his number pm me
mantadoc
I've never paid more than 70 for a recore 3 row, if not heavily modified engine, is a lot of money for no benefit
bris jas
Its cooling a 4.0 V8 which was running a little hot.
Rob36
What he said. Straps and bottom need swapping Hmm. Someone suggested that there was a supporting pin at the bottom of the Carlton rad that you could run a die down so you can bolt it to the bottom mount like the standard one. So the whole bottom needs swapping? Never pulled a rad apart before! Sounds messy? I can get a cheap carlton rad y'see.
mantadoc
The straps unsolder of the sides of the top tank and off the bottom tank. If you a tap into the captive nut at the bottom you puncture the bottom tank.
Exclusive Opel
I have a Carlton rad in my Manta. Didn't bother swapping the frames around. Yes, run a die down the bottom pin. The side one's were just cut off. I then made a pair of shallow U shaped brackets for the side supports and literally just bolted them on where they would be on a Manta one. Should have some pics somewhere but not at home at the mo to look.

Rob36
Well I decided to gamble on the Carlton rad. Its new old stock - £28 including postage, so if I can successfully modify it to fit, should represent a bargain!
