MANTAMAN
Schedualed to come up for auction in Kings Lynn, 1800 Y plate ( very early ) Manta coupe, possible been restored ( wheels look too shiney for even a very low milage car ) but could be a good buy depending on what the hammer goes down for ( often less than flea-bay etc ), just hope such an original 1.8 coupe doesn't end up as a 400 replica - http://www.angliacarauctions.co.uk/en/classic-auctions/latest-classic-car-catalogue/saturday-23rd-august-2014/1983-opel-manta-berlinetta/

MANTAMAN
yes it is the coupe relative of my Manta but not the one your thinking of. I have a very scruffy red 1800 hatch on a Y plate, the fabled Britney ( long story, it needs repairs which it will get done when the person who is entrusted with it gets it to the front of the que ! )
MANTAMAN
Talking with someone who attends the Kings Lynn classic auctions regulary in an official trade capacity, he says they are mainly attended by dealers looking for high end classic for thier show rooms, cars that are considered 'lesser / ordinary vehicles' don't interest them, there are few public attending these auctions so sometimes cars go very cheaply, recently a good condition two door MK 1 Cavalier went for £400, someone got a cheap car to do an Ascona 400 replica... Might be worth taking a close look at this Manta, though it dose depend what it's like underneath, if it's as good as it looks ontop then it could be a bargin, but if it's got patched up chassie rails, sills and been 'blown over' ontop of filler then it's next to worthless. If so, you might have the perfect one for me.
NEIL W
I attended the Auction house at Kings Lynn in January this year & it was a waste of time. The photos are good on the site but when you see them in the flesh - well not that impressive. Since it is on a Saturday you actually get 100's of Joe public out for an afternoon as they charge £5 to enter so that reduces the entry fee for sellers & keeps buyers fee lower than normal too. Yes there are many dealers which can be seen the following week on e-bay when they reappear. Dealers are also off loading previous non selling purchases for other Auctions in the previous months bought further round the country - you just have to view Brightwells etc to see them reappearing - this is the trade & how it operates. Auctions are there for a reason - the shift cars quickly for a seller / dumping problem cars / selling virtually scrap cars at premium as more than scrap value to weigh them in. Joe public with more deposable income are attending to find a little toy which is fine - it does push the prices up in a bidding war. Auction house are happy & so is the seller. I went down to see 3 cars out of the 120 on offer - so spent my time with a torch & nose looking over these only. Took me 10 mins to say no & drove the 150 miles back home. It was surprising how many cars were push started or didn't start - not a good selling point & you would have thought the auction house would have tested them the day before. My experience is buyer beware - good cars are with enthusiasts. The Manta especially C series are going to be the next Escort amongst the Rally boys especially one without a sunroof - have a look at the increasing number of TR7 / 8's, Hillman Avengers & Chevettes being used in private hands as the Escorts prices go through the roof. Andrews Heat for Hire - here we go i digress - see below some action form the Scottish film library which contains a wee bit of Opel fix at 20 mins in. http://ssa.nls.uk/film/6699?search_term=CAR%20RALLY&search_fields=Film.*&search_join_type=AND&search_fuzzy=yes Edited July 25, 2014 by NEIL W

That Cavvy 2 door made a bit more then £400, £1200 including buyers premium. It looked quite tatty in the pic as well. http://www.angliacarauctions.co.uk/en/classic-auctions/results/results-january-2014/1980-vauxhall-cavalier-16-2dr/
NEIL W
Yes I saw the silver one in January & the paint was shot & interior so looks like a rally car in the making. If i remember the engine bay was a black hole of Calcutta too. It was on various websites before the auction but must of not sold - the reserve must have been high as the bid was put to the owner when it didn't sell under the hammer. Any solid chassis / suspension fixing area / non sunroof car is cheaper to turn into a rally car - all the interior / engine gearbox & diff will be dumped. Welding is expensive & in the ACA add - 'remarkably solid ' rings a bell. Also reg number has a value I Remember the Ford Capri too In November 2013 http://classiccars.brightwells.com/viewdetails.php?id=3929 Then in Diss Norfolk for sale http://car-from-uk.com/sale.php?id=66752&country=uk In January 2014 back at Auction ( for a reason ! ) http://www.angliacarauctions.co.uk/en/classic-auctions/results/results-january-2014/1971-ford-capri-20-gt/
MANTAMAN
The dealer could have made money on this Crapi, it was estimated at £8000 in the first auction, two months later and the hammer goes down at £9450, if they bought it at or near the original estimate you can see why they put it back in the auction, if they knew there was a good chance of making a good profit this way they'd be daft not to. Would be nice to know what it's like underneath, if it's good then this could still be a cheap Manta if no one else fancy's it on the day. NEIL W
Always remember the buyers fee +vat when the hammer goes down - Brightwells was 10% +vat so add £ 960 to hammer price. ACA is 5% I think - worth a bid tho'
1900SR
The thing to remember about buying at auction is that it's like buying privately, except you don't get the chance to drive the car first. There's no comeback unless the car is misdescribed. In the case of a modern car this can mean that prices are lower than you'd get anywhere else. Classic auctions seem to regularly make good results though, especially ones like ACA that tend to focus on everyday stuff rather than exotica. I'm surprised at the Capri if it was a dealer who bought it, as they had it up at £9000 but paid £8800 ex VAT. They then sold it for a hammer price of £9000 (the ACA result include buyers premium, ex-VAT), which less the 5% sellers premium of £540 inc VAT and entry fee which was then £50 I think, means a loss of £390 in the space of a couple of months. I think it's more likely it didn't really sell at Brightwells, and it's been the same seller all along, or it was a private buyer who decided against keeping the car (didn't like it , wife said no, maybe a major problem with it, but less likely if they tried to sell direct, etc)
MANTAMAN
the listing has been updated, estimated at £5500 - £6500, this Manta would have to be perfect to make that money, not saying it isn't but it would need carefull examination to confirm this. 1900SR
They've got a Mk1 Cavy 4 door with a Manta front and and a 3.0 engine as well.
Jack
I have just looked at the description again and it says that it is in superb condition throughout and has had three previous owners so hopefully someone in the club buys it or at least I hope it ends up in the club one way or another. NEIL W
Did not sell & no one put in an offer after the sale. http://www.angliacarauctions.co.uk/en/classic-auctions/latest-classic-car-catalogue/saturday-23rd-august-2014/1983-opel-manta-berlinetta/ This Mk1 Cavalier was a smashing buy - just for the parts only - would look good as a sleeper if toned down http://www.angliacarauctions.co.uk/en/classic-auctions/latest-classic-car-catalogue/saturday-23rd-august-2014/1978-vauxhall-cavalier-30-24v/ It looks like another feeding frenzy during the bidding especially when you see the amount paid for a Ford Capri especially the least desirable face lift mk 1 & wrong wheels.Lokks lovely though but think a 3 ltr S or Ghia would be faster. The TR6 which sold was for sale at a dealer in London until last month at £29,950 so someone saved £3k http://www.ddclassics.com/car-sales/Triumph--TR6-Roadster-2,000-miles-only!/8379.htm For the rest of quite a lot of no sales & results http://www.angliacarauctions.co.uk/en/classic-auctions/latest-classic-car-catalogue/saturday-23rd-august-2014/

Lot Number: 49 76,000 miles with service history. Described by vendor as being in superb condition throughout. Three registered keepers. Estimate: Result: £3,675 At a Dealer in Norfolk so at least you have the Sales Of Goods Act as a backup & still a good price £ 5,450 - pity it has a sunroof but on the other hand if it has a strong shell it will save it from being a Manta Rep. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1983-OPEL-MANTA-BERLINETTA-1-8S-Outstanding-condition-76000-Miles-/161477473704?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item2598ceb5a8 Edited November 8, 2014 by NEIL W
