Starting Problem

Hey guys

My A series (2.0s) has been working fine for a while then all of a sudden boom, starting problems. First things first, I am not getting fuel through the electric fuel pump. The pump is earthed to a ground via a cable and also through its body. other cable connects to a live which comes on when I turn the key to the first position. At that stage there is a clicking and buzzing sound but no fuel coming through. My fuel gauge isnt working so I've topped up with approx 10L of 87octane fuel. I've removed the fuel filter in case it is clogged. No fuel coming through.

The fuel pump is fitted in the engine bay. Should it be better fitted near the fuel tank as I heard that these universal fuel pumps are better at pushing fuel that pulling.

Is my pump goosed? Is there a fuse that might be suspect?

My battery seems strong, is it a weak battery maybe?

Can I add to the pump in the engine bay, i.e run two fuel pumps? one in the back and one in the engine bay i.e one that pushes and one that pulls?

Since I am getting a buzzing ticking noise from the pump when I switch the ignition on is this not clue that it is functioning properly?

I would just use the one pump and pop it in the boot as rutts says. that's where mine was.

If its clicking its doing something, but could still be a pump or fuel line problem.

How about taking the feed pipe from the petrol tank off and putting some pipe on and popping the end into a petrol can to see if its anything clogging up the line?

Sounds like you might have run low/out of fuel and your pump cant draw the fuel all the way from the tank.

As andy says take the pump feed pipe off, get another bit of pipe and stick it in a petrol can sat near the pump.

Then see if it starts. If your still not getting fuel to the carb your pump needs replacing.

If it does 2 ways of fixing It spring to mind.

Best solution is to move the pump to the boot, that way If you run out of fuel again it should manage to prime itself and get fuel to the engine.

If you want a temporary fix you need to get fuel to the engine bay so the pump can prime.

I'd get a one way/none return valve. Fit it in the fuel feed line in the engine bay, add a length of clear pipe then using a vac pump suck the fuel along the line. Once you see it in the clear pipe remove it and add normal pipe from the valve to pump.

Then it should start as the pump only needs to pull a short distance.

Pumps are good at moving fluid but lots have issues moving air and cant draw the fuel any distance. It takes quite a lot of suck to pull fuel all the way from the tank to engine bay

Hey Thomas

I just extended the live and ran it down the sill and into the boot.

You shouldn't need 2 pumps, as mantasrme say's when its all setup and running you shouldn't have any problems.

Had mine fueling twin 45's for years and never had any issues.

Fuel pump in the boot with bowl filter (i had my filter in the engine bay) and your setup. Its they way most are done.

Also im not keen on having a fuel pump in the engine bay with all that heat etc.. more chance of problems if something does go wrong.

Hey Thomas

That was just a picture i found so you could see how most people have them setup (maybe not with the tank!) but it is a bice setup.

Mine is a little bit different as i still wanted to use the boot, but its all braided up :-)
