Steering joint - rubber, dangerous?

A guy I know (who is into Opels in a big way) mentioned that the Kadett steering rack has a rubber 'universal' joint, which he said should be checked / replaced upon purchase of a Kadett - to prevent the potential for "total steering loss".

Does the Manta have the same rubber steering joint?

If so, should it be replaced with a better (all metal?) joint?

As Andy says, never seen one break up on  a manta. You do need a rubber joint in there as its the anti vibration bit, without that you will get loads of unwanted vibration. I think you could get an after market one similar, but they are riveted on as part of the lower input shaft. I also think its reinforced with some sort of fabric so it does not perish the same as just rubber, i could be wrong on that bit.

Yeah never seen on broken on a Manta, although they are a weak point on some other cars.

If you fit a Quickrack they mostly come with a 3/4" DD bar coming out of them so you use a 2nd upper column U/J to join to the intermediate shaft. Never noticed any more vibration when using them.

And there was me thinking that Opel had thought of this with that metal cage part that is riveted in to the assembly

We did this on mates 27,000 mile D reg Exclusive and with 400lb front coils it rattled the hell out of the steering column over bumps or rough roads
