IanMc Posted December 23, 2017 Share Posted December 23, 2017 I again turn to the gurus for some more help and advice please. This morning I set about sorting out the connections on the alternator because: - the red warning lamp was lit. - the gauge indicated that the charging/battery level was only 12v - the wiring was generally in a bad way with dodgy, loose and corroded connections etc. Everything was sorted out (cleaned, reconnected, insulated etc), but the red lamp is still illuminated. Does this point to an internal alternator fault or something else i.e. voltage regulator. My alternator is a Delco Remy type. If somebody could please provide some things to check and/or replace it would be greatly appreciated. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
wayne ingham Posted December 23, 2017 Share Posted December 23, 2017 (edited) If you have a voltage meter you can check the voltage output check at the rear of the alternate for voltage output, (red wire is the voltage output) and check at the battery the from the alternate voltage should be 13.8 volt to 14.8 volt if you get different reading check earth wiring you can replace the voltage regular if that’s a fault Edited December 23, 2017 by wayne ingham 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
H-400 Posted December 23, 2017 Share Posted December 23, 2017 If the problem is in the alternator, the common reason is as Wayne mentioned the voltage regulator. The brushes of the regulator is one reason of regulator problems. Unlike a Bosch alternator the Delco Remy has got to be opened to change the regulator, a Haynes manual will help you because the Flemisch one is to hard to understand: 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I do have a Haynes manual covering the DR alternator, so in time I will strip the thing apart and take a look. To be honest I think that I will probably take all of the part numbers down and order, brushes, diode pack, regulator etc all at the same time and fit them regardless of the condition of the originals. It seems daft not too when the thing will be in bits anyway. cam.in.head Posted December 25, 2017 Share Posted December 25, 2017 Hi. You mention that the wires on the side alternator plug are mangled? . The plug should have two wires as shown in the picture. One marked batt goes to the allternator positive terminal and the other marked ind goes to the dashboard ign lamp. If you unplug this wire the dash light should go out.if you touch it to an earth anywhere it should come on. As it should when connected to alternator. If all wiring is correct and light goes out when unplugged then the original wiring short could have caused the alternators internal regulator to be damaged.
