Hi to all,

Ive just taken my 1987 GTE for an M.O.T. and sadly it has failed on a worn steering column universal joint. The garage couldn't offer any help as the part doesn't come up on their system. So, can anyone confirm the part number or cup size etc for the steering column universal joint. Are they all the same across the range? My chassis number is 58J if this helps.

Many thanks,

Steve.

Thats not a normal wear and tear part, so if i were you i´d go to the scrappers, or take a look at ebay for a good used part ?

The Flaming river ones are excellent, FR1716DD is tha part number, ebay motors USA normally has these for way less than you would pay for a genuine one if you could find a genuine one ! expect to pay around $35 to $50 for a billet steel one or more for a stainless one, plus post to the UK.

The Flaming river one makes the steering feel much nicer too, smoother and will last longer, much longer.

I advertised this on here a couple of years ago and had no takeup, but I can get OE spec manta steering UJ's for £30 plus p+p and they are identical to the OE ones (apart from being painted black not zinc plated) so if you want it to look original......

If I could get a volume order together I can get them cheaper, as they are made to order in batches of 50. If I could get a full batch order I could probably wangle getting them in zinc passivate finish too....

here's one as they come at the mo:

That link is a UK seller and is listed as twice as much money as you can pick these up in the US.

Try a ebay.com or ebaymotors.com search for FR1716DD and see what happens, even with post I bet it way cheaper.

Thanks Paul for the info. I've looked at the Flaming River ones and I'm not sure if they are the same, they look slightly different but that might be my imagination. The one on the car looks exactly the same as the one shown in the Haynes manual (Opel B series) page 171. It is also the same as the one shown on the parts diagram disc I bought from OMOC some time ago, part no.03455209 for models 50 80.

I see Retro Power has uploaded a photo of one he has so I will reply to him and see how I get on.

Thanks again,

Steve.

I've used the Flaming Rive joint and its far better than the OE spec ones. Yes its not a direct replacement as you have to have to make some screw resesse in the coloum for the retaining bolts but its not a hard job
