JohnClayton Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 (edited) See here FYI... http://forums.mantaclub.org/topic/33546-upgrading-manta-brakes-for-rallying-on-a-budget/ Ideally we need some brakes that will take upgraded pads (e.g. EBC Green Stuff/Blue/Yellow stuff, Mintex 1144 etc.) Edited April 27, 2013 by JohnClayton
doveyte2800 Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 John, Is this a repeat thread or are you still looking? I would have thought that the volvo route would be the simplest way as they fit straight on. You need calipers from a 240 model, GT if poss, and discs from a 2.2 Carlton. The calipers are 4 pot and the discs are 22mm thick ventilated. EBC and Mintex pads are available. Regards John

JohnClayton Posted May 11, 2013 Author Posted May 11, 2013 That looks absolutely outstanding! It's well outside my price range unfortunately, but at least we can see what the Gold Standard solution is...

JohnClayton Posted May 20, 2013 Author Posted May 20, 2013 Searching under the car's reg number brings up the following options from EBC: http://www.ebcbrakesdirect.com/search/byregistration.asp?regno=E718+WMR&x=25&y=9# The 'Turbo Grooved' brake discs GD005 (£115/pair) are solid but appear to be better than standard: http://www.venommotorsport.com/ebc-grooved-brake-discs-rear.html http://www.camskill.co.uk/m31b0s3135p53067/EBC_BRAKE_DISCS_EBC_TURBO_GROOVE_BRAKE_DISCS_-_GD005_-_EBC_Turbo_Groove_Brake_Discs_ For the standard Manta discs, EBC do the: Green Stuff pads DP2325 £44 Red Stuff Ceramic DP3325C £50.72 Yellow Stuff DP4325R £52.65 Pad size is 100x59x15mm I've just spoken to EBC and they CAN do the above pad in BLUE STUFF (which will last a lot longer than YELLOW STUFF) for about 10% more than the cost of the YS equivalent, but it has to be a 'special order' made in their lab (so will take longer to supply). On the subject of the Discs, the GD005 rotor (246mm) IS the best disc they do for the standard Manta: http://ebcbrakes.com/product/3gd-sport-rotors/ "For this reason EBC produce two ranges of sport rotors, the GD series (or 3GD series as we call them -they are both exactly the same item)" being discussed here are the noisier of the two designs, our sister range the USR sport rotor range is MUCH quieter yet offers similar performance values." Thanks for the suggestion of Rally Design. I've just phoned them and they buy Wilwood calipers from the US and then make up a kit themselves with all the other components needed e.g.: Chevette - Manta - Midilite - 246mm Vented Kit http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=10510 BK19D £438.90 They are also working on a new kit for the Manta which gives 280mm Discs (available in Jul/Aug 13 hopefully): Cost approx £470-500 approx +VAT
JohnClayton Posted May 20, 2013 Author Posted May 20, 2013 I forgot to mention that Bob S of EBC reported that he had 3GD discs on his BMW rally car with no problems. The EBC brake shoes for Manta's standard back brakes are only available in standard compound, but they have sold lots of pairs for Club racers with the following cars: Porsche 924, MGB, MG Montego & Maestro etc.: "We only have one material as they are not made in the same way as pads. The material is better than OE but is not a dedicated competition shoe, although we do sell several sets for race cars with rear drums.” He reckons that they won't last that great for motorsport usage, however (probably only 2 club race events per pair!)

JohnClayton Posted May 22, 2013 Author Posted May 22, 2013 I've just seen a post by Wayne Thomas on this thread: Board index » Misc » Technical Forum Discs: Vented, Grooved, Drilled & Solid http://www.britishrally.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=51232&sid=19aa3e00fbfff962e09f047df7105cbb which says: For the Manta get some early carlton 2.2 disks (4 stud) and some later (for vented disks) volvo 240, 4 pots. They'll all bolt straight on, you'll just need a couple of washers to centralise the caliper. drew19 added the following: Capri 2.8i discs bolt to the manta hub but are prone to distortion due to the way the disc is made.
JohnClayton Posted May 22, 2013 Author Posted May 22, 2013 I couldn't find any of the relevant calipers (which sound good as they are '4 pot' on eBay), just these single pot ones: Volvo 240 Variant1 Brake Engineering Front Right Brake Caliper OE Spec http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-240-Variant1-Brake-Engineering-Front-Right-Brake-Caliper-OE-Spec-/350756328610?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item51aab4d4a2 for £112/pair but this would appear to be the right Carlton disc: FRONT BRAKE DISC VAUXHALL CARLTON (78-86) 2.2 84-86 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FRONT-BRAKE-DISC-VAUXHALL-CARLTON-78-86-2-2-84-86-/310532922575?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3ACarlton&hash=item484d345ccf £66 for a pair Part Number : NBD055 Make : VAUXHALL Model : Carlton (78-86) Varient : 2.2 Date Range : 84-86 Type : Vented Disc Diameter : 246 Disc Thickness : 23 Disc Overall Height : 55.5 Centering Diameter : 73 Disc Mounting : 4 Disc Quantity : 1

doveyte2800 Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 John, The Carlton disc is the right one, 246 dia. If you go on brakeparts.co.uk, go to calipers and click onto volvo you will find 240 model listed, again open up the pictures and you will find the 4 pot caliper for this thickness disc. They list them as in stock ? Hope this helps John
JohnClayton Posted May 23, 2013 Author Posted May 23, 2013 (edited) thanks guys -v helpful. On this page: http://brakeparts.co.uk/#page=parts&pageSection=BDF&mancode=GM&brand=VAUXHALL&model=CARLTON&modelversion=CARL*(82-86)+MK2+2.0+%26+2.2+PETROL there appear to be several types of Vented disc listed for the CARLTON (1982-86) MK2 2.0 & 2.2 PETROL (either 20mm or 23mm in thickness) ranging from £18-£31 each including VAT. JohnClayton Posted May 23, 2013 Author Posted May 23, 2013 (edited) The EBC DP?143 series pads (e.g. DP2143) are a direct match in their dimensions and shape to the BPS1576 pads. The DP2143 pads are specified on this site: for every single variant of Volvo 240/260 other than: VOLVO/240, 260/2.7/74-75 VOLVO/240, 260/2.8/74-75 for which these pads are specified: Pads: DP135 80mm x 65mm x 15mm -and these pads are are a direct match in their dimensions and shape to the BPS1131 N.B. there don't appear to be any performance pads listed by EBC for the DP135 pattern (but I reckon they could probably do it as a special order).
