ascona400r
Hello guys.. Need to take the gearbox out of a redtop powered Manta for a friend. It has a 1.8s gearbox fitted and was wondering if it is possible to remove and attach the gearbox whilst leaving the engine in the engine bay. Cheers Brian
mantadoc
It is for the 1.8 Manta so unless head too tight to bulkhead in some way no good reason why not
Sutty2006
Personally I would support the back of the engine somehow, to take the strain off the engine mounts. A bar across the wing rails with a strap under the sump would be fine.
manta88
I tryed a few years ago and found that there was not enough room as the clutch cover plate is bigger on the XE conversion and ended up removing the engine.
mantasrme
Yes its possible to remove the gearbox, with practice you can do it quite quickly. Think Mr Rutter was down to about 1hr or so when he was changing boxes regularly when he was breaking them a lot

Sutty2006
I've had an 1800 box off on my own on DIY garage ramps and axle stands. Had to lie on my back, gearbox on my legs..... Then on refitting used my feet on the bell housing and hands on the output flange to wiggle it back on. I should get a proper ramp shouldn't I? Haha
