Opel Manta A Radiator Upgrade.

The original radiator on my manta A series has decided to give up and am wondering if radiators from any other cars would fit these or has anyone fitted one from another more modern car. Really something with a bit more cooling have looked into the alloy rads but are expensive. Dont mind doing a bit of modding to get it to fit and will probably be fitting an electric fan while i am at it. Thanks

The original rad is a bit skinny on all the manual models, the later 2 litre radiator fits the full width of the aperture and has more capacity. You will probably need to change the top hose to match, for one that is an inch or so longer than the original.

I believe unleaded fuels burn hotter than the 4 star available back in the day.

Cheers for the replys. Have found a fairly local place that should be able to re-core havent got a price yet but would imagine it sould be alot cheaper than an alloy rad. im sticking with the 1.9sr engine for the moment so the radiator thats in it should be capable of keeping it cool and possibly an electric fan for good measure.

The standard A cooling system in good condition is fine, although it'll probably not like a really hot day and a traffic jam. Fitted a recored rad to mine this year and it runs about 1/4 mark on the temp guage, down from half way. It did climb to half way in the queue to get into Bourne this year, but the E-Type parked next to us got to full deflection on his guage, so I guess mine's OK.

The orange A I had for a while was a sod at first, overheating all the time. Problem was it had all been rebuilt a few years previously and not run, so the rad and waterways had clogged up, and the engine was tight from being newly rebuilt. Just before i sold it I'd got it behaving itself after spending ages on the rad unblocking it.

So I am getting the radiator re-cored and am thinking of taking the engine driven fan off and replacing it with electric. was originally going to fit an electric fan on the front side of the rad but there is not enough room to fit it. So my question basically is would there be any advantage of fitting an electric fan?? the engine might rev a very slight bit easier without the fan but then with the elctric fan you have more pressure on the electrical system. it would be nice to have the choice of both with the electric on a switch but the room is catching me.

This is what i had on mine

http://www.theopelproject.com/?attachment_id=691

twin kenlow fans (but lots of different ones about now. I think they were 7"). They have a cooker type pickup for the thermostat, but while your having the rad done get them to fit a boss fitting so you can use a universal stat.

They work great, suck the air in through the nose cone and keep it nice and cool.

Only got rid of them because the kenlows are a bit big depth wise for the new rad setup so have some the same size but ultra slim from the US from an SUV :-)

as you can see its a bit tight :-)

I would ditch the standard fan, but just my view.

Hope some of this helps

Andy

if you get radiator re-cored I think its a rover p6 that fits but is three core deep giving more cooling capacity.

that is what is on my ascona a with a 12 inch single fan electric.
