*energy*
just about to start this conversion with my cavalier, theres a guy on here with a v6 in his "A" he knows everything there is to know and has gave me some info already,he will reply on here. so far i know we need, custom made sump,1.8 pick up pipe,xe engine mounts, move the rack down and notch the x member or put a bonnet bulge on it,and use the c25xe management etc...and mate it up to a getrag box or do an omege box conversion with involves cutting the tunnel i believe. spiney_norman
It's a hell of a lot less work to just chuck the Varajet in the scrap and buy a Weber...
mantaray
Can be done, but its a lot of work and not cheap. Energy has covered the basics above, but contact me if you want a chat and ill talk you through it.
john p
is there an easier option engine wise other than the redtop route?
andyc
2.0Ltr 8v injection from an old Cavalier etc. Will bolt staight up and being a 1.5 motronic it will onlly need four wires connection to get it running, once you have fitted a fuel return pipe Andy
spiney_norman
If it's any use I have a 1.8E from a mk2 Cav here, with everything to get it running. Use the head, camshaft and injection setup on your existing engine and you've got 115bhp and all the reliability of injection. It'll still need the wiring mods and fuel return line which andyc mentions above but it's an option.

andyc
Good option and the 18E engine is a good engine, not many 1.8i Mantas out there Andy

As from memory the 18E has a higher compression ratio than the 18S, so some of it's extra power/torque comes from this.
spiney_norman
It is a higher compression engine, always assumed it was down to the design of the head but now I think about it the pistons probably have a lot to do with it! Still, just a case of swapping sump and engine mounts and re-using the Manta camshaft carrier to keep the original Manta dissy.
john p
would the exhaust have to be modified too?just been offered a Vectra 2.5 v6 but I guess that would have similar probs as the omega
spiney_norman
You'd have exactly the same issues with any V6. You wouldn't need to modify the exhaust for the 1.8E though, just re-use the original including the manifold!
andyc
The 18E is by far the cheapest and quickest option. A V6 is quite a complex job and there are only a couple in the club, i'm planning a V6 but at the moment i'm collecting various bits and bods and trying to sort problems out before i get there . Kevin Abbott
If you're going to the trouble of changing the tank, adding a return and modifying for an electric pump just stick a valver in it. My XE was on on standard injection. Returned great power and mpg. Was reliable. Easy to do. Parts are very easy to find. There's a reason so many mantas are on xe power now. Once you change to a better engine in a manta your eyes are opened to how good the cars are.
john p
well good news the car will be running again as is turned out that the vacuum advance unit is possibly the cause of the running probs so when I can get hold of one I will bung it on,also hopefully will have a lock up sorted soon so it will be coming off the road till next spring. will look for a redtop over the winter months and hopefully get it sorted.many thanks to all for your advice and offers of help
