Rev counter not working

Hi all , anyone know of any common problems with the rev counter not working on a 1988 exclusive.i have checked the supply from the coil and all is good at the plug at the back of the clock. Thanks in advance.

Do you have a multimeter? You can do a basic check at the back of your gauges with a multimeter. But if it’s GTE and runs fine, then the tacho signal is present as it also feeds the fuel pump relay for RUN signal.

for wiring check and power you can remove the dash top and front binnacle to access the tachometer. it can be unscrewed and pulled out of the dash. you are left with 3 terminal sockets 

one will be live with ign on ,one will be negative permanently and the other should have continuity to the green wire at the coil ( test unplugged to avoid any false readings)

if all is well and engine runs normally anyway then it sounds like a tachometer issue . rare thou !

I had a intermittent rev counter a few years ago, it would drop, and then reset, not very often, I don't know if it's coincidence, but I rebuilt my alternator, and cleaned all connectors, rev counter is sorted, 👍
