Just an aside, what on earth does this spring do???, cant see any reason for it, the gearbox output shaft is in a fixed position, the prop is held in a fixed position by the rear axle assemble so this spring cant be taking up slack anywhere, i await to be enlightened.....

I have a couple of spares here if you want one posting, or want to come collect one.

As for its purpose, as the axle goes up and down the propshaft moves in and out on the spline in the back of the gearbox

I put the spring down as keeping tension/pressure on the end of the prop so there is no wobble causing wear of the splines.

But i could be wrong about the reason, i just refit them as i assume opel had a good reason for it :)

I think its also there to stop too much movement front to back on the prop as just replaced the rubber doughnut on my prop and i think if it moved to far forward you could pop the bearing out of the doughnut.

Im going to have a rummage about in the garage to see if i can uncover it and if not i will drop you a PM.

Thanks Andy

I haven't a clue what it's for either, just know that when I did the 5 speed conversion I forgot to put it in, I ran it for twelve month and its been fine, I put it safe knowing I would be doing a referb some time and I've had a few beers since then and it's long gone,, it must serve a purpose, mantasrme I'll pm you thanks.....

it keeps the blanking cap on the end of the diff pinion shaft in contact with the innermost of the sliding spline.keeping the torque tube bearing centered in the rubber mount.i suppose without it all will work ok but the shaft could bounce around back & forth possibly causing wear or noise ??? like someone said earlier gm fitted it so its there for a reason.
