Manta A Engine Conversion

Hi all,

I'm trying to work out what options are available to me for an engine conversion for my A.

Currently it has a (dead) 2.0 GTE and I'm looking to put something in that's more of daily driver than for show. I've seen people have managed to get 16v redtops in etc but I have no idea how hard this would have been? I guess I'm looking for something that's a bit more straightforward.

Any ideas or pointers would be most appreciated.

Stick with the CIH engine. I thought the late A series in germany ran injection? as a nice 2.0L with injection would be just right for the A and wouldnt need lots of mods and different bits adding/changing like you do with the red top.

just my view.

Also i though i would have a quick google and see if i could find some info on the A with injection and found this picture of a GTE, must have been one they only did on the continent!!

Budget wise not sure, depends on what's on offer I suppose. I'll probably look to do it for under 2k if I can.

I do already have 2.6 V6 out of a Vectra which is tempting. But it's front wheel drive and I have no idea what gear box would be needed. I'm also more keen on doing a conversion that has been done before and works.

first thing i'd want to know is why is the Injection CIH is dead ? in good working order this engine would be a good daily driver in a Manta A, if it is very worn out rebuilding this engine is the first choice as you already have it, don't need to search for conversion parts, back in tip top from a CIH is as tough as old boots!!

611, Andy when i click on your link i get a photo of a Fiat 500 labeld Manta GTE

The Manta A had a fuel injected GTE version from 1973 onwards, sold in mainland Europe and America, here's a photo of one i took in Holland last year -

I'd personally go for a 2L SEH or NE engine fitted to an 1800 manta geabox, using the sump etc.

Cheap, easy and reliable. You can even keep the gearstick in the standard position with a small modification to the gearbox linkage.

It's seized. A rebuild would get it going again for sure but it wasn't the best conversion to begin with and so I always planned that I'd put something else in.

Has anyone tried doing a honda S2000 engine before?

LOL ... you said you wanted straight forward??

Option 1:   2.0 GTE engine,

Option 2:   2.0 16v  (red top), 1.8 Manta/ Carlton/ Omega g/box,

Option 3:   2.5 V6, 1.8 Manta/ Carlton/ Omega g/box,

Option 4:   V8

Option 5:   Jap engine

All have been done before, option 1 is the cheapest and easyest and if fitted to a 5 speed box makes a big differance to the usability of the car.

options 2 and 3, are more work, but if you are planing to do the work yourself should be doable for your 2k bugget.

My V6.

here's a question, do Honda engines rotate the same way as most other manufactures ? been told that they are the opposite, in a front wheel drive the engine would on the left and gearbox on the right this would mean to use a S2000 engine you'd have to use the rest of the drive train as well which could involve major fabrication.

  • 1 month later...

Cant say 100% on the 2.2 but the 2.4 frontera CHI goes straight in.

Well almost! you need to use the 2.0l engine mount brackets and there are a few pipes for cooling to re-route and thermostat housing so i think the 2.2 would be similar.

It fits, but if you don't have the original 2.2 inlet manifold you've got to adjust the location of the Manta A manifold.

The inlet-outlet ports of the head are not similar as a "normal" CIH.

As Senator wrote the thermostat hous is different (old Manta A wil fit with an adaptor-plate)and throw away the 2.2 camshaft.

It's made for torque, not power.
