Nivlek2525
Two bad runs in the clear either side, same place. https://photos.app.goo.gl/r7TMznXVHdax5v6g8 I did go really heavy with the last coat of clear. I mixed too much and tried to use it up. Rookie mistake? Other than that I'm really pleased with it. First time using a gun and first time ever doing base and clear. Ive watched a few YouTube videos on removing runs but if needs be I can sand it back and give it another coat of clear. Will leave it a few weeks to really harden before I do anything. Plenty to be getting on with.

Looks like the clear has pulled the base off? Was it dry enough? I was standing with the technical data sheet in one hand and the paint gun in the other at one point so I'm afraid I can't offer too much advice. I'm on my 3rd gun. A cheap on that came with a set of air tool. Actually OK for primer. A cheap hvlp one that got good review but isn't really any better to be honest. It's came with a 1.8 tip so is OK for getting lots of high build down. Then I bought one recommended by trevs blog on YouTube. It's a duren tools conventional 1.3 and it's totally different. Really easy to set and use. And really cheap off ebay. https://photos.app.goo.gl/TaaqZjvj9KYgXHEA7
Jonathan Pounsett
That area must be quite hard to paint. The “professional” who sprayed my car had a run in exactly the same place. Don’t beat yourselves up over it @Nivlek2525@1200bandit Edited April 23, 2022 by Jonathan Pounsett Spelling 🙇♂️

The rest is OK. Actually quite surprise to be honest. I'll pull in out into the light later when the sun comes around the front. It will help it harden I think and I'll get some better pictures. Nivlek2525
Bonnet in epoxy. https://photos.app.goo.gl/1TxJJL35qz1Dx6g39 Bonnet in high build https://photos.app.goo.gl/9C6ESU15JqR76v2j8 Flattened back to 1000G https://photos.app.goo.gl/cxffLUteT5xD9RTi8 Boot and bonnet ready for paint https://photos.app.goo.gl/oegJh6e6MNpjLU4H9 Managed to get loads of dust in the base and a run and a reaction with something in the primer so decided to let it fully dry and knock it back to 1000G and paint it again. https://photos.app.goo.gl/JXuPVotRqKZjupP76 And finally re based and 3 coats of clear. Still managed to get dust in it. https://photos.app.goo.gl/kQA2qeUigBYDtZEHA But at least its only in the clear. May sand out. Will let it fully cure and see what I can do. Pleased I bought extra paint and loads of clear. Think I will be needing it. Edited May 15, 2022 by Nivlek2525
Jessopia74
It’s a pig when the solvent goes through a previous layer. Nice job on the prep 👍
Nivlek2525
Boot lid after sanding back and polish with g3 compound. Quite pleased. https://photos.app.goo.gl/pXAYeX3pZVef3Wi57 And the rest of the car is all one colour now.....sort of. 2 coats of epoxy and 3 to 4 coats of 2k high build. https://photos.app.goo.gl/GpVqND4J8fNkuBp8A Note the over spray on the dash...something else to sort. Just got to guide coat and cut back to 1200 and I can start getting some colour on the body. I might actually get this painted this summer while it's a bit warmer. The next photos should be a painted roof. Edited June 19, 2022 by Nivlek2525
Jessopia74
Shame about the dash. At least they are pretty easy to get out, especially without glass in. But you always think you contained that paint overspray, but always can sneaky past 🤦♂️

I bought a full interior for it and I think there was a dash in there. I should have masked the dash off separately before I masked the windows up. The tape just lifted and started blowing primer everywhere inside the car. Never mind...all part of the fun.
Nivlek2525
All painted a couple of weeks ago but needed to wait for a hand to lift the bonnet on. https://photos.app.goo.gl/kjdWrf6orot9gM7F6 Passenger door is painted but needs lifting on. There's a good amount of runs and dust in it but I planned to wet sand it all anyway. I'm not ruling out repainting a few bits if needed. I've loads of colour and clear left so not a problem. At least I can start putting things back together over the winter when the temperature isn't right for painting. Need to form a reassembly plan now..... Anyone have any tips on refurbishing aluminium trim. It looks like it has some sort of clear coat on it which has failed. https://photos.app.goo.gl/K4Ry9jqPSQw9gE6a6 Edited October 16, 2022 by Nivlek2525 Typos
Jessopia74
Strip it and polish it (or take to someone with the wheel that fits on bench grinder), then re-clear coat it. Other alternative is wrapping with chrome stuff by your local wrap company Edited October 16, 2022 by Jessopia74
Nivlek2525
Cheers, I'll give that a go. Think I have a polishing wheel somewhere. I wasn't sure if the clear would stick to a polished surface. I'll try a bit and see how I get on.

But if you are worried, then strip it and maybe go with wet P1500 so it’s Matt , and reply on the lacquer to gloss them up? Either way should work imo.
Nivlek2525
I think you are right, clear seems to stick to anything. It's more like glue than paint. I don't think wrapping is an option for me, too much of it and too fiddly.
Nivlek2525
I let this project update slip a long time ago but thought I'd add this short video and photo from the the cars first (very) short drive to the end of the cul-de-sac. https://photos.app.goo.gl/PaNzN3EXEzR6rwGo6 It's 'taxed' and insured but there are a few jobs to do before I take it in for its MOT. It's exempt so I don't mind driving it up and down the road. Helps identify all the little snagging jobs to do. And there are plenty.
Jessopia74
Looking and sounding great. Look forwards to pics when the little finishing jobs done, looks like a few trim bits

I need the chrome corners for the rear window. I've got them somewhere but can't find them anywhere. I want the infil panel for between the lights. Not period correct I know but I like the exclusive rear bumper as it looks like the one from the i2800 and sort of matches the front bumper. The paint needs a tonne of work. Wet sanding it makes a huge difference and makes it look quite good. Windscreen washers need connecting up, once i sand, polish bonnet. Front headlight wipers aren't currently working (mot fail do you think?) Wheel centres are in a box somewhere. Spoiler and fuel cap need painting still. I'm sure there will be a lot more but it runs, drives, stops, changes gear, steers.

In my experience you will only find your “misplaced” windscreen corners and wheel caps shortly after you’ve bought replacements. The car looks great and I hope you are as happy as your passenger clearly is. 🤩 1 1

The amount of stuff I've bought twice I could build another car. 8 hours ago, john hibbert said: Nice one big day for you when you can take it for a drive sounds well ,well done you Kevin you had to climb some mountains to get to this point Yes, I can't believe it's taken 6 years to get to this stage and still a bit to do. I've still got plans to do a 2.4 conversion at some point and I've got the i2800 wheel arches sort and there'll be other things. I don't suppose you ever actually finish.
Jessopia74
Ah, the fable of the project that is never finished 🫣😁 I have also purchased multiple of the same item, even though I started an excel list for what I have, it still happens as I still think ‘might need it’ anyway 🤣🤣 Better to be looking at 2, then missing 1 is not a good ethos, but extremely common for restoration, so I am told 😉 1
