Red A Series on its way to Northampton Motorsport

Recommended Posts

Ok, so this is slightly cheating! as it was my A Series 🙂

But as this is only the 3rd time its been out the garage for more years than i can count, i thought it was worth a little cheeky post!!

Not quite ready for the road but the cam is now bedded in and the engine has had some low load runs and a basic map setup that will mean its derivable once i have sorted out a few issues we came across!

close, but no cigar 🙂

Hmm what is the map you re talking about Andy?

Some years ago i bought  throttle bodies and ECU for a company called Webcon (they do lots of webber carb stuff). Its was fully mappable (or so they said!) now when i came to get it tuned today there was loads of issues with getting it working and setup (intermittent triggering of the fuel pump, over fueling etc.. and not so easy to adjust) and as it was the first startup the guys there bunged on the Omex 600 ECU with makeshift loom and it fired straight up and ran (a few exhaust alignment issues etc to sort out) but ran well enough to get it going and then after 20 mins of cam break in they ran it on the rollers and set some basic maps up over the rev range so it would be driveable so i can get the engine run in and then i can return for a full rolling road session and have it fully mapped!

They used a ford 2.0l zetc base map which was not that far off for the opel engine 🙂

Now i need to find the money for the omex ECU and modify the webcon loom to fit and then after sorting a few other bits it will be good enough to run it around for a bit and find all the other things that dont work before the proper tune up!

They can even remote access my laptop to check setting and adjust when i do have it running, nifty stuff!

Webcon very hard to adjust and can only be done via registered dealer . Mbe is what I use slightly longer process to map when compared to omex our dta I use ap racing engines Andrew is very very professional and the right price he will steady state map every 250 rpm all the way up the range and get them afr figures spot on he won't let you leave until he is happy and the thing is performing properly he maps all the popular makes if I was to upgrade dta would be my choice  back to ap I took my mk1 cav with national hotrod spec Xe and the truly flys now Carnt recommend him enough top bloke

Webcon did do an ECU anyone could map (Pro 5) and based on the same base software as omex but with a few restrictions that made it a little harder to map, but the main problem is they have stopped doing ECU's and dont support them so any issues and you are stuck and as Northampton Motorsport were a webcon dealer i was hoping i could get that up and working and look to the Omex later but it seems somewhere there was some sort of issue with the Webcon and at there prices they charge if i had spent too long working it out i could have bought the omex 🙂

It was good to get it up and running so now i know where i am with it and with this engine im just looking to get a nice derivable engine with a bit of poke (its 2.4 so should go well)  im not looking for as much power as i can get out of the engine as if i want speed i just the the Honda out of the garage 🙂

they were very helpful and its always good to know of other helpful places just in case so good to know about ap racing engines as you are never too sure unless someone can recommend.

I have used Steve at Northampton Motorsport for many years as im pretty local to them, He is a great guy and extremely clued up.

They built the engine in my Escort Harrier many years ago with twin 40s and full webber alpha set up with tps, That used to fly.

They set and balance the webbers on my old camper and have recently set my Exclusive up.

They do all the mapping for Retropower too.

Great guys.

Megasquirt 2extra.

I have the extraefi variant that is highly regarded. However, it would be nice if I have some contact with a club member that already gone through this process, and maybe a base map 😉

Ahh, now i see. unfortunately now. Not sure if the guys in the US use it or not? Quite a lot of useful info and help on opelgt.com, not sure if you would find any help there?
