yes 3 speed auto is fine. except maybee on 1.6 models where it ends up a tad underpowered !

certainly no issues on the 2.2. it goes up into top quite soon and rarely needs to drop down a gear.

whatever gearbox that ends up in this conversion will work and plenty of advice here to help with it if needs be.

its all personal preference realy. i hate the short throw 5 speed boxes and have yet to find a nicer gearchange feeling than the long lever 4 speed. but then i like an old car to have an original driving feel about it.

everyone to their own i suppose. no offence intended.

the later mantas ( with bodykit) suit the 5 speed but just doesnt feel right in a pre 82 car.

👍 agree

I'm kind of with Cam.in.head, I really like the 4 speed box. Mind you I liked the 3 speed auto on my 1900 Berlinetta as well.

👍

i may even part with my box if youre struggling but im up in west yorks

Hi Cam, just seen your message, is your Box a four speed? All the parts I have been offered are miles away anyway. I would probably try and collect them all in one go on a weekend if I can plan it correctly. Shaun thinks he may have a consoul / prop etc. If you were to part with your box what would the price be?

Cheers

Kenny.

make me an offer ?

i have the 4 speed gearbox with bellhousing,lower cover,gearlever and gaiter,clutch fork.

i have the mounting crossmember ( rubber mounting may not be perfect but would fit until you found a better one)

flywheel and bolts, can give you a used clutch but you would probably want to fit new anyway.

you will need a crankshaft spigot bearing .i havnt got a spare one of those.

He would probably need the clutch to get a refurb unit as new parts seem to be getting really hard to source.

Now I'm excited! Come on I'm new to the restro Manta scene although now in it for long term. Let me know what you know you want for it. 🤣. It would be going to a good home 👍. Would be putting new clutch and spigot in anyway.

just looked on abay and theres a few clutch plates on there so no issues there. covers/pressure plates dont wear as much so can be usually reused.i do anyway !

there is also someone selling      clutch cable mounting rubbers    which you will need as part of your parts collection for the conversion.

they often split .

i will pm you .

Thanks to all who have replied to post, Good to see there is a helpful Manta community out there. I have hopefull now started my parts collection for this conversion thanks to cam.in.head 👍. Just waiting on another couple of the community looking in their sheds/shelves. I will post some pics on progress during conversion.

Thanks again to you all.

from what i remember a 4 speed prop,5 speed and an auto are all different.only have 4 sp and auto to compare.

if you realy get stuck i do have allthe parts needed ( everything ) for the full conversion but would rather just sell the afiremoentioned ones in case i ever want to change mine back .

Guy,

Can't believe the response I had had for the parts required for this conversion. cam.in.head has agreed to give me everything as a job lot required for conversion. I will update on progress as I carry it out. I'm sure there will be other things / advise  I need going forward.

Thanks again, Glad there is such a thing as this club!

5 speed and 4 speed props are 100% different. Auto is different too, but as to where it sits in the scale of things not sure. But when I converted my 79 SRB some years ago from auto for 4 speed , needed different prop and then I got a 5 speed box, had to wait for a prop as I forgot about that. However by that point I had skipped my Auto prop. It’s not much. Couple of inches, but enough they can’t even be used temp.

My feeling is that the  Auto is the shortest, but I honestly could not be 100% on that one.

Hi all,

Eventually have had time to get ready to carry out conversion to manual, split opinion on whether I should leave it original as is as it us going fine. I prefer manual and thanks to cam.in.head I have all the parts required to convert to 4 speed. I will update post on progres.

Hi, Can anyone please tell me if my clutch pedal should have a return spring fitted? Strange how the pedal just seems to float on the shaft. Ready to fit modified pedal assembly but not sure regarding whether there should be a return spring at the clutch pedal or not??

Thanks

Kenny

I’ve found the auto box really good, smooth and punchy, kickdown is good too so I think I will leave it automatic for now and spend the money I’ve saved on other goodies, having said that I do like a good manual box :)

Thank you,

Ref. the pedal just live on shaft? Is this correct? I feel like drilling shaft and fitting a split pin or something to stop pedal moving as much on shaft.

Kenny.

IIRC it should have a spring washer (wavey type), with a retaining clip
