Opel Monza Manifold And Injectors

Recommended Posts

Not cheap, but is a rare part now, ideal for converting to fit a Turbo or High capacity 4 Cylinder CIH...For ease of fitting the throttle body (managed to buy two new ones) I cut off the two rear runners for my engine...Chris Burt helped with the blanking plate (with 5th injector) and welding.

I bought this last week,(after thinking about it for about a month), For my 2.7 exclusive coupe; it’s on its way to David Manta sport in North Yorkshire.
as I explained to him last week, I remember Herman talking about his Dutch friends cutting it down, machining + gas flowing explicitly for 2.2 and above capacity CIH engine’s.

It will replace the Carlton 2.2 item I’m currently running.

Snap lol! Sounds like you're working on the same idea as me! 🙂

How are you getting on? Are you going the front or rear runner removal route? I made up one years ago by cutting out the front pair of runners but the throttle body fouled on the underside of the bonnet so I'm gonna have another go with another manifold and fit a 2.6 Dual ram throttle.

The pics below are from a guy in Norway who also cut out the front runners and fitted the 2.6 throttle. He got his to fit by installing shorter engine mounts.

hi 2400Man,

this is with David "Mantadoc" Howell in North Yorkshire, and he favour's using the front 2 branches as it will sit lower under the bonnet. he says its a fair bit of work to get it all done so i wont see the results for a while.

i just hope this extra work is worth it as I hate having to give him extra work, when he has had enough on his plate with my car as it is!

I’m sure he will happily spend the money you pay him 😁

But, I would go with front 2 too, it’s not the limiting factor of the top end of the engine anyway so the difference between the two options would be unmeasurable.

I went also for the front two, the intake is lower and no problems to fit the throttle house. Some friends of the Navy welded the back plate and also the earth connection. Why do those shops of the Navy and the Airforce have nicer tools as us, the army?

Still not fitted on the GSI, am working on our home...

Hi,

following on from my earlier post, David is having problems finding someone who can weld aluminium; Chris Burt is mentioned by Pete in the initial post, as helping with this, so I'll reach out to him.

Yeah, it is difficult to find a welder that has the setup &skillset to TIG the cast Alu parts. I had a pipe specialist do my head work, but due to the workload those guys have on industrial sites with pipes/manifold and repairs that does pay very top end of their trade, I had to wait a long time 😬🤦‍♂️

thanks Jess,

I'm not on a schedule so can afford to wait; I've just PM'd Chris Burt, and hopefully he'll reply soon. this will replace the modified Carlton 2.2 item currently on my 2.7 CIH-greatly improving the fuelling capacity, hopefully.

Yeah, I am a member of a group on FB that is supposedly just for welders and the amount of ppl that struggle to find a decent welder who can or more to the point, willing to take on these jobs does show there is demand. Most are small, dare I say hobby? jobs so would be ideal for a semi retired guy who wants to do a bit from his or my unit. Yet I am still to find such an individual!  So keep us posted how you get on with Chris as I have a few parts I need doing of a similar task.

Chris has just given me a local firm to him:

Ollie Mallard of https://www.olliminium.co.uk/ who are an auto fabrication specialist

I've just passed this onto David.

Glad to hear that Chris has passed on details of Olliminium to you. I've just checked out their website - top notch stuff!

Surprised that David had difficulty finding someone who could weld ali. I guess I must be lucky round here in Suffolk. I've been put on to a guy in Ipswich who modifies ali sumps and does other stuff for the motor racing types. Gonna see him about doing my Frontera sump mods and the cut down manifold.

Again, let me know how you get on with that please 👍

Yes sure thing Jess, though it will be a while as I can only spend a few hours each week on this project. I'm hoping to get the basic engine built up by xmas, then it'll be on to sorting out the custom sump in the new year.

dont know if I will need a 5th injector Pete; David will know the answer to that question. I'll be using a Megasquirt Gen 2 aftermarket ECU.

No is the answer, cold start enrichment table achieves the enrichment required via injectors.

latest update on this:

David has cut the Monza down as shown here:

image.thumb.png.4c1dfae051efd05fc2d5c246367e17f2.png

and has run into the following major issues:

1/ the Frontera 2.4 fuel rail on my engine touches the Monza manifold at both ends; this is the back end:

image.thumb.jpeg.61a4d2abfabf24eb4844491596507a67.jpeg

the standard Monza setup is similar to standard GTE with its leak prone rubber pipes:

image.thumb.png.f1ec283d2ac631a755a901c072721446.png

also the standard manifold bolts will not work with this setup as the heads are too big to clear the sides of the larger runners.

lastly the 2.2 throttle linkage wont fit.

question:

has someone done this conversion in the past and if so, how are these obstacles resolved? Herman has prepped his Monza manifold but hasnt fitted it yet.

Chris Burt had one cut and gas flowed on behalf of someone else. I need solutions asap as progress on my car is being held up.

help....

I found this old post on the Opel GT forum: a custom made fuel rail

The new fuel rail I made is made from 3/4" DOM steel tubing. I brazed pieces of flared 5/16" tubing that I cut from the stock fuel rail...these fit into the hose ends of the injectors. Yet to be welded onto the fuel rail in these photos are the AN fittings at the ends for the fuel line inlet and the Aeromotive adjustable pressure regulator.

The injectors are blue Bosch '036' injectors, which flow around 380 cc's at 44 psi. More than enough for the horsepower goals of this engine.

I've passed this onto David.

Oh bugger mate! Sorry to hear about your grief. I didn't realise that you intended to use a Frontera fuel rail otherwise I would have mentioned that clearance could be a potential issue. That was one benefit of cutting out the front runners as per the pics of the manifold made up by my Norwegian contact but of course there are other issues going that route, like bonnet clearance.

Someone (Paul Newport?) did tell me they had got round this issue by modifying the Frontera fuel rail, cutting off the triangular end plates and just welding the ends up I think.

Re the manifold bolt clearance, I dealt with that by carefully removing material - don't recall it being a major issue. However, I'd be interested to know what bolts they used on Monzas, Senators etc. Maybe a question for Derek at GM6 spares.

yes mate; I should have expected snags due to the size difference between the two manifolds which is significant. I really like the custom fuel rail from the Opel GT forum and as its bespoke, (and looks the business), so that's the route I'll take. as for the throttle linkage: that'll be a custom made item too I'd expect, unless David comes up with an alternative from an existing manufacturer.

the joys of modifying!!

Is it the thickness of the manifold that differs?  I see, to recall a mod with washers stacked, tacked on the edge and then cut with angle grinder back down to create a ledged washer. It was not on a manta but some other car that used a similar shared clamping bolt, perhaps mini.

Yeah I know what you mean about the joys of modifying!!

The best of luck. Will be following with interest.....
