Paul Barrett
this is what I am not happy with, its still far from definitely working out as it is as an idea, I think a more proven way of an IRS system needs to be employed (hotrod/kitcar), which will work very well and look a lot better. I am pulling a lot of the ideas from what I've already done and using some of that parts. diff definitely, also I am concocting a way of using the bmw E28 shafts and hubs, but separating them into kitcar type hub carrier, rather like sierra stuff used by locost builders, but a little less flimsy looking (no offence intended to anyone, this isn't going to a super lightweight 2 seater). the MX5 rear subframe is a good starting point as far as I can see for dimensions and arm angles, and I like its 'bolt on' design, which is what im going for I think. Manta again
Look forward to the next transformation for the rear axle. Looks like your garage has already filled up!
Paul Barrett
Haha, it's clear down the sides now honest, I'm goig to concentrate on getting the front end built up, and keep planning and researching the chassis/rear end
MANTAMAN
Trailing arm rear suspension works well, most modern rear wheel drive cars have it, Autograss racers building specials useing it because it gives excellent traction. other suspension types might need upper arms which will mean huge intrusion into the rear of the body shell to accomodate them. there is a whole can of worms to open here, putting a different suspension system in a car means things like all various wheel angles have to be calculated, like camber changes in roll, for which you need to calculate the roll centre, for this you are getting into the world of graphs and equations! Paul Barrett
wel, bit of a waste of a day today, im so annoyed! bloody welder gun had decided to pack, wire feed is playing up due to the gas valve piece deciding to separate, only found this out after taking things apart around ten times!! so annoying as nowhere is open on a sat for this kind of stuff. hey ho. on the upside found the bmw rear hubs I needed from my local oldschool BMW breaker guy. been doing tonnes of research and drawing for rear suspension and chassis builds, got steel sorted for it all too. Paul Barrett
All my rear arms are stripped down now for chopping and turning into some rear uprights, also my epoxy mastic arrived to coat the front end.
Paul Barrett
Also 'bit the bullet' and ordered a euro torch conversion kit for the welder, can't really afford it but need the welder working tip top for over Xmas break, read lots of recommendations for converting to euro spec with a decent gun for much better results. Manta again
Couldn't agree more about how painful it is when the welding gun plays up, mine has been a pain in the arxx, didn't know about the euro upgrade will have to look into that. Happy welding.
Paul Barrett
Yeah, looks straightforward conversion from info I can find on a quick search.
Manta again
Be interesting to see how you get on with the epoxy paint. From my understanding of epoxy materials I hope it can cope with the impacts from road debris, but it sure as hell has got to be better than hammerite I once used on my suspension a few years back before I knew better. Paul Barrett
some piccies, as always like to see everyone else's , few hours squeezed in today e28/e34 (BMW 5 series basically) rear trailing arms, stripped down (huge 36mm hubnut to crack, a lot of whacking with big hammer and drifts to get bearing out etc about to be butchered bosh large holesaw onto pillar drill to cut some 3mm plate voila butchered hub carrier, needs more work cleaning up for welding, but my god there was so much steel to get through! I've got a giant iron filing anthill developing on the floor. this is the beginnings of an upright, im going to be using poly bushes the locost boys use for simplicity and easy/cheap parts source Edited December 16, 2013 by novashed
Paul Barrett
Seems the welder eurotorch conversion has been successful, much better wire feed, had to wire in a gas solenoid valve too as originally was a manual valve in the torch itself, typical of a hobby light industrial welder. Going to get a new drum of wire too as have spotted some tiny rust spots on it which don't help with wire feed a getting a smooth weld bead. Paul Barrett
Came home to find this bag of poly bushes for the rear end build, they are Haynes locost spec shore 80 hardness, little harder than I would of liked but for £30 for 14 I'm not complaining, just need track down some tube for the bush arrives now, I may have some already.... Paul Barrett
The welder is ten times better now, I knew it wasn't just my amateur skills.. More strengthening plates on subframe to chassis rail arms, will holesaw these to lose a bit of weight too Uprights coming along

Paul Barrett
Cracked on a bit today for a couple of hours, I'm concentrating on these uprights, cranked up the late to make some sleeves for the lower wishbone to bolt to
Paul Barrett
Well, I have made no progress with being ill for most if the holiday break. Only thing to report is that I've got hold of some alloys I want to use.most of you guys on here will not like but it's the 'pro touring' American look I'm kinda basing the build around They 17x10j rear and 17x8.5 fronts bmw 5x120 pattern, will fit the custom rear hubs fine, will either have to make some front hubs or use some adapter plates, will see further down the line Edited December 30, 2013 by novashed
Paul Barrett
These new wheels are huge! Lol 265 or 275 wide tyre, can't wait to chop out the floor now. The diff cradle is coming along nicely, measure measure measure weld, still warped a couple of mm out of square damn it! Uprights are done, but may need narrowing slightly due basing my measurements on a different wheel that isn't as thick walled as the above, easy fix. Paul Barrett
Spent most of this evening measuring up a track width and considering wishbone angles and sizes etc, lots to consider. Also really need to source some tyres and new bearings for the hubs to knock up a jig

Paul Barrett
Correct tubing arrived for the bush casings, nice thick wall for a strong weld Brackets also arrived too, had a crack at welding them on the cradle, measure measure again, tack it, measure then weld up One bush bolted in to check all is ok, next up is a jig to make up the wishbones, can't wait!!
