Daveyboy20
My mk1 cavalier saloon isn't very happy at 75-80mph and I'm averaging 23mpg. My old xj6 was better than that!
andyc
Hi Dave You'll need the transmission, propshaft, rear cross member, cross member body mounts and the top of the tunnel oh and a speedo cable. You can either cut the four speed tunnel out and fit the top section from the five speed or contact Paulmanta on here who can a conversion on the five speed shifter so it still comes out of the same hole. Daveyboy20
Doh - that's a lot more than I'd hoped! I'll have to just drop the speed instead - can't be spending a fortune.

It doesn't cost a fortune. It is a very easy conversion, I've done it a few times to mk1 cavaliers.
andyc
Its a good weekends work if you are going to cut the tunnel top out and move the rear cross member mounts in the floor. Plenty of 5 speed cars being broken at the moment so getting all the parts you need shouldn't be much of a problem Cheers Andy
Snowy
I've never bothered moving the gearbox mounts, I mod the gearbox cross member support.
rutts
that is the quickest and easiest solution with cross member for gearbox. gearstick mod for standard 4 speed hole is easy also.
paulmanta
If you get a 90degree converter for the speedo cable where it goes into the box you can use your original cable. 90degree converters are available from opel GT source. 611
You can also get the converter from Thomas in germany http://www.edelschmiede.com I have done a 5 speed (not on a cavalier! but on an A series) and its easy. Shorten the linkage and the mounting plate and added an extender to the gearbox support and even got someone to graft the a series stick on so it looks like its a 4 speed. You just need someone that's good at welding :-) Andy
Daveyboy20
Thanks fellas - I'll leave it for now but keep on the lookout for bargain parts. Might try and do it around easter instead. I was kind of hoping new box and prop and a couple of hours work like on a capri!

I was kind of hoping new box and prop and a couple of hours work like on a capri! It is only a couple of hours work. Even if you fit the five speed tunnel top it doesn't take very long at all. I've done the conversion in the morning and drove the car in the afternoon.
