¢ordy$hine
Hi folks I was trying to fill in my log book details. My Opel Manta is still on the logbook as a V8, but has been changed ages ago. It has a C20XE redtop now. So I was looking for the new engine number to send off log book. Can anyone help locate the engine number please. I've enclosed two images of numbers I've found. The long number 2400025590-226 looks like it's on the Gertrag gearbox and the second number on the engine block under the exhaust manifold. Many thanks. MANTAMAN
Your right about the first one, it is the gearbox, the second does look like the engine number, i am not familiar with XE engines so i can't be certain this is the engine number, i do have a few eight valve engines but can't remember where the number is on them, i'd have to look when i get to my workshop ( if i can remember when i do get up there ! )

Will try scrapping off yellow paint later, but it's a little strange how some numbers are not viable, getting worried why this engine wasn't on the log book? 17 hours ago, MANTAMAN said: Your right about the first one, it is the gearbox, the second does look like the engine number, i am not familiar with XE engines so i can't be certain this is the engine number, i do have a few eight valve engines but can't remember where the number is on them, i'd have to look when i get to my workshop ( if i can remember when i do get up there ! ) That's mate. 😊

That's mate. 😊 Changing engine numbers and sizes is now a pain to do with the DVLA, as they want some sort of proof. https://www.gov.uk/change-vehicle-details-registration-certificate/what-evidence-to-give If you can't find the engine number I'd be tempted to put "not known" on the form. I'm guessing in your line of work you've probably got a friendly garage who could write you a letter saying they've inspected the car and it is fitted with a Vauxhall 2.0 XE type engine, but due to the engine paint the engine number is not visible. Be careful saying that to the DVLA. I've know a few people say they don't know the engine number and end up with a mandatory vehicle inspection forced upon them. In the garage where I work in Oxford they have VOSA inspectors pop it quite frequently. I will have a word with them. H-400
Bought once a new engine original from Opel, only the block with crankshaft, pistons, rods and flywheel. Had no number, so if you don't find a number after scrapping the paint...
1900SR
There are quite a few cars out there with "Not known" as the engine number, although a lot of those were imports where the importer didn't bother putting the engine number on the paperwork. Another option may be if it hasn't got a number there to give it one of your own (or that one cast into the block under the manifold). I had a Manta GT/E that had an Ivor Searle recon engine in, and the engine number was one that had been assigned when the engine was reconned, not the original GM one. I didn't say they wouldn't do it. So don't get your knickers in a twist. As soon as you mention modified to the wrong person that's it. We all forget there is a points based system for your car. All I said was they ended up with a mandatory vehicle inspection. So for the sake of taking the paint off just do it. And don't mention modified if you speak to anyone at the DVLA. Very nice courteous people work in DVLA, I have a son and two other members of my family working there!
