Berlinetta
Would these suit the rear axle of a 1978 1.9 automatic? I dont know if I actually need them or not at present...

The 9:31 stamped on the crown wheel is the ratio - 31 divided by 9 = 3.44. 3.44 : 1 may not be the right ratio for the 1.9 auto if you want to keep it original (think it is probably 3.67 : 1 on your car). 1

Yes a 3.44 would be wrong for a 1.9 auto I have a perfect condition used 3.67 cwp set with mint bearings at £100 plus postage 🙂
malbasys
3.44:1 gives a brilliant ratio for long distance cruising - my SA built 1900 A has a 3.44.. If you were to swap to this this though, you'd also need to swap the speedo or it would be under-reading.
cam.in.head
yes the 3.44 would lower the cruising revs and in most cases autos are usually fitted with a lower ratio final drive anyway. as mentioned the speedo would be out but you would just need a 'red' drive unit to swap for the 'yellow' unit in the gearbox to bring it back to correct
