Does anyone know how much power a 2.0E engine can take before you star to get problems? also how much power can the 5 speed gearbox take from a gte? i'm only asking because i'm planning to put 4x36mm bike carbs on my manta gte and I don't want to damage something i I can help it.

thanks.

hi,

Power and reliability go hand in hand and come at a price, but if u are just putting those carbs on a standard engine, why? There are far better ways of improving a CIH.

As far as how much power the engine can take , well just putting carbs on will not do it any harm other to your bank balance, likewise the gearbox.

Dont want to sound negitive but if you want to get , say 170 + bhp, which the engine will make, it will cost far more than a set of carbs.

There are many links to engine, power on the Manta site so dig a bit deeper

thank you Ian.

I was going to do other modifications to the engine to get more power but i just wanted to know roghthly how much power the engine can take before a con rod bends or the crank snaps for example and before a gear strips its self of any teeth.

thanks.

One other question, I don't know weather it is just my engine or a design problem, but my engine only properly accelerates when your doing about 5k-6.5k before then it pull, it has plenty of torque but it only accelerates properly at higher rpm. iI'm only askin this because have driven a 1989 pug 205 gti 1.9 and its got a very good power band strait from 2500rpm to 7500rpm. it could be injection differences but I was wodering if all the gte's are the same.

Get a set of twin 45's, a nice cam, a little bit of work on the head with some bigger inlets and you should see 150+

have a read through some of the threads because as Ian says there have been loads of threads on CIH power.

Also look up Shug's thread on his car as he ran bike carbs and had loads of trouble with them.

lamchop77 on here is your man for CIH power :-)

Hope this helps a bit Andy

Power.....blocks have seen over 400bhp. I've had 180bhp using std pistons, rods, crank no probs, need a better clutch at that level though!!

Spend 1000 quid on pistons, rods, headgasket and the engine should be bulletproof up to 7500rpm. They will go higher BUT the rockers become the problem then and can split down the centre.

Gearboxes are rated at 240nm(178ft/lbs), but if you read the beemer forums they are blowing there's at around 300bhp/300ft/lbs. Gearbox guy told me the manta and beemer internals are the same part no's. My 2.2 was prob over the torque rating of the box and i had no probs with it. There are 2.5 motors running 230/250 bhp and big torque that are using 240's without too many issues.

As for bike carbs i would stay clear. As Andy says Shug had no end of trouble. I looked into them via Bogg Bros and told them my engine specs, they reckoned that i would need monster bike carbs off 2 thuderace (i think) bikes and it would cost a fortune. save your money and go weber/dellorto route or better still throttle bodies and management. Dave Newman, of Newman cams advised that as the first thing to do as it transforms a std engine (a good one that is!!) giving more power/torque and driveability.

If you want a pokey 2.0, 234 cam, 45mm inlet valves plus a bit of smoothing of the head ports, bigger exhaust BUT use the std manifold with 45's pref or 40's even a 38 DGAS, pref lighten and balance and vernier timing gear but not essential should give 150-160bhp if the base engine is sound. Shouldn't break the bank at that!!!

HTH

Rutts/Retro

I am with you guys on this, looking at different boxes for the 2.3 and 2.5 motors. As thse are going to be for a track car i'm prob going to use the 4 speed capri box, proper tough box. Later i'm gonna go all out (when funds allow !!!) for a Tremmec from Summit Racing, 6 speed close ratio. Think that should sort the problem!!!!!
