andyc
To start with you can't go wrong with one of these http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/151te-turbo-mig-welder?da=1&TC=SRC-mig%20welder Been using an early version of this for a few years using .8 wire and gas from http://www.sgsgases.co.uk/ Just do a search for a local supplier Cheers Andy
mantadoc
I go 0.6mm for body as for gas unless using a lot no cheaper for big bottle by the time you have bought regulators and rental, then there is the lugging it around. Pub size is not too bad. I have done a load over the last few years and pretty sure I'm on about even with no up front spend
stradacab
Had a Clarke like that. Used it on about 4 cars and sold it for only about 50 quid less than I paid. Brilliant thing.
Shug
I had the clarke 150en. Was a good wee welder and a great one to start with. I upgraded to a portamig 185, which is pretty damn good but you'd need to double your budget at least.

Paul Barrett
I use 0.6 for pretty much everything car based. Try and get the best you can afford, one with a eurotorch setup is good, most cheap mugs suffer with poor wire feed causing crap welds. I converted my siegen 150 (sip) to eurotorch, it's an 'ok' welder for the amount of work I do.

What he said, mine is a Snap-mig 130, bought in 1987. 1 Min winding has become unreliable so I have to weld hot and fast. This is the same thing more or less you see branded Cebora / taskmaster / BOC and a few others
