Mickfrad
Any tips for removing a well stuck piece and what you use to stick these back on. I’ve got a set of the retrotec ones https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/202280716874 which are chrome and better fitting so this one needs to come off I’m thinking heat but don’t want to break the glass. ®evo03
There is a solvent glue remover, or strong 100% alcohol base, some hand sterilizer, nail varnish remover. Or did you try really hot water, not boiling! Ive never had to remove them, its normally an issue getting them to stay in place. If you can mark the area of the bracket with masking tape, give the area of hinge a light dremel, or sand, gives the glue a good key to stick to. Mickfrad
I’ve been soaking the area regularly with thinners hoping to weaken the glue but it’s just not getting underneath. I’ll give hot water a go see what happens. I’d leave it alone but it’s the only one attached and different to the new ones.
Mike.
I purchased the Reprotec hinges as well, one hinge on both rear quarters was off leaving the other original hinge still glued in place by Opel. I like you was terrified to force, heat etc in case of breaking the glass, therefore I’m quite happy to run with one new one on each side and I’ll wait for the originals to drop off then replace with the new chrome ones as and when. After you put in the black plastic B pillar louvres you see very little of the new hinges anyway.
hoobby
Glass can be heated but must be done slowly and evenly to avoid thermal shock.
H-400
Same as Mike, one is still original. Remember the reprotec ones are a bit too wide and I glued a small piece of rubber in them.
Jonathan Pounsett
I think the original glue is type of cyanoacrylate (super glue) which becomes really brittle when it freezes. That might explain why the rear quarters are so prone to falling off. See if you can put them in the freezer overnight. 🤷♂️
Mickfrad
Cheers guys The freezer idea sounds interesting unfortunately my freezer isn’t big enough. Looks like I could be leaving that one on for now.

Mickfrad
When I bought the car it had fixed quarter light rubber in with the catch and hinges removed. So some time ago I bought off eBay used rear windows with the catches on which Is what I was going to use. maybe it’s an age thing or just stupidity I forgot about the original glass which had no fittings and was buried at the back of the garage. So bit of time spare today new hinges and glass offered up to car position marked and tape cut away then roughed up a bit with sandpaper decided to try a 2 part epoxy glue which when mixed is thicker than some glues so thought it would help to fill the gap hinges stuck on tape and some excess glue removed. Seem fairly well attached. Will leave the glue to set overnight and go from there. Only time will tell how well they’ve stuck.
Mike.
Before I bought the Reprotec hinges I asked my bodyshop who did my paint to glue on the missing hinges with industrial/professional adhesive for metal to glass of which they did......all good until I fitted them, all going great until I attempted to close the rear quarter glass, as the glass started to get pressure from the seal, just before finally locking the catch home an almighty SNAP, I needed a change of underwear but thankfully it was just the hinge snapping off and no glass broken. Reprotec ones ordered after that, even the industrial glue was not fit for the pressure from the rubber 😬 To stick on my Reprotec hinges I used double sided green tape, folded round the glass, took up he gap and has held in place brilliantly. Jessopia74
I can't remember the name of the glue I used to use, but it was a UV activated type, quite expensive. So a sunny day was best. But after a few years at winter on one of those very cold days after it had been damp they would crack off the glass, so needed to be redone. ®evo03
Use to get SNAP, when closing door, must have been air pressure, reglued and front vent left open, sorted! Although the last time, i really prepped the surface of glass with dremel, used tiger seal, left to cure for 5 mins, pressed together and pressed in a vice, cardboard slices on each side, then cured behind sofa and next to radiator for a week! Think i mastered it, over ten yrs ago now!
