  • IanG changed the title to Heater Matrix Cover

Good idea there, if anyone has one half decent they can lend me I have access to a supplier with cad and 3D printing and could get a batch made and share the cad file, let me know please if anyone can help

I might have one. But I’ll need a few days/maybe a week to look for it. I’m sure I had two but will need one for my project.

Thanks for this, stuff like this should be high up the club priorities for getting hard to get parts 3D printed, happy to help in this case!

Same here Ian, I have access to a 3D scanner too but I think a CAD model is a better option, particularly if the original has flaws. I can have prototypes printed if needed and maybe small quantities, happy to work with you.

I'd say they are really needed. Most Mantas need them 👍

I’d agree, when I restored my manta, the rubber on mine just fell apart, the more I glued, the worse it got, it just disintegrated.

Good to know I’m not alone, as soon as I can get a decent original will start the process and get a prototype and some idea of pricing.

My employer has a injection moulding and fabrication subsidiary so asking them for a favour on this!

Be interesting to hear what they can do, tooling costs may be a hurdle unless your employer has short-run facilities?
I have a half-decent example on my car, glued in places but largely intact. I’ve not filled the system with coolant yet so maybe an opportunity to remove and measure the main dimensions and begin sketching something up

The broken one if the rest of it is good would do to get the cad done.

I am hoping that a small production run  cover the tooling costs and make it worthwhile.

The majority of my insulation pieces were in a bad way, after storing in the shed for several years and in honesty weren’t the best when I took them off. I tried a bit of TLC and joined cracks and ripped areas with rubberised superglue and then ‘painted’ a layer of UPOL Tiger seal on the back in the worst areas and allowed to set. Once fitted, a rub with rubber restorer brought them up ok. Only one piece was beyond repair, so I made a heat deflector using embossed aluminium sheet to hide it.IMG_2625.thumb.jpeg.5c15f28030b366bbce289c43e6713bb6.jpeg

Not had any offers of a sample to scan so can’t progress this at all.

I know I have one, but its condition is not great. What do you think of a plant scan up ones that average condition, perhaps repaired some way to keep it in shape etc?

I’ll try and box this one up that I’ve got, I’ve been manic busy these last few weeks. Then next time I’m at the post office I’ll send it out.

Brill thanks, hope to get it scanned at work, they can’t make it  but know someone who will I’m happy to fund this to get to a prototype and a cost per unit .

If it’s successful I have the the flat one that goes behind the battery too. I did have a mint one for the servo housing but I’ve not seen that for a few years.

Apparently the best format is Step, my chap at work is happy to scan into a 3D model.
I also have a supplier lined up to quote for a prototype, either Multi Jet Fusion or Polyjet in automotive heat proof rubber or other materials, once we have the quote we can look at the best options for our application.

It would be great to be able to get the bulkhead covers 3D printed, as they have been unobtainium for many years and have been the sticking point on so many restorations. Its a shame that they are sided, as the same issue exists over on the mainland. I did look at getting some done about 10 years ago by a 3D printing company but they said the materials they used would not be suitable and they would have to injection mould it, which would cost a fortune.

Things have moved on rapidly in the 3D printing world though, so great to have some people onboard with experience. If there is anything I can do to help, please shout. I would certainly be up for a set myself (or 2!).
