Guest
That looks great Robbie. Careful though, make it too nice and you won't want to take it out the garage. Pete M OMOC 5885
Robbie
hmmmm good point Rab forgot about that, may have to pop in a org set of springs back into the front, buggar of a job changing the springs in the I, the spring compressors have to be in exactly the right place or they just dont fit, take me quite a few times just to get them right. http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706

Robbie
Hadnt the materials kicking about Mark over the hols but its an idea which will be tried on the springs at a future date [^]. Working on the inside of the wings and they should have some nice shiny 2 pack soon [] http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706
Robbie
been a busy week [] but the car seems to be coming along nicely at the moment. [] The inner wings on both sides have now been finished, after all the welding was done that they required they were stripped to the bare metal then coated with Jenolite , a rust inhibitor primer was then applied, then stone chipped, with another layer of 2 pack primer and finally 3 coats of black 2 pack. It's a lot of work to do it this way but the finished result is worth while and hopefully the rust will be kept away for a long time to come. The inside of the outer wings were done in the same way, this should stop the wings rusting from the inside out, and prevent those nasty blisters that pop up on our nice paint work. Engine bay next its suffered many years wear and tear but hopefully with plenty of sanding and priming it will come up respectable [^] Need a passenger side door if anyone has one for sale, the one on this car is well past its sell by date. http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706
Robbie
Took a closer look at the C pillar air vent today, it was bubbly but when the grinder was put to work the extent of the damage appeared, hard to see in the picture but there are quite a few holes leading up to the air vent as well as the horizontal area in it, think it will yake quite a bit of time to get the quarter panel cut away around this area and new pieces made up and fitted in. Ever wish you had,nt looked any closer at the car [][] http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706
paulmanta
The exact same thing happened to my first A series shell, they were poohed up with bridge-a-gap and when i prodded them it all fell out, i ended up welding them up as i like the smooth look anyway, The new shell has perfect vents so i am in two minds what to do with them, if i decide to cover them it will be by epoxying the steel cover plates to the holes so i can reverse the mod at a later date. VW and Audi use this epoxy glue to bond quarter panels to the new cars so it is good stuff, plus it is sandable so it smooths out very easily, also it will come off when you want it too if you use the right solvent. Robbie
The vent should of been a lot better paul but the last time the car was done instead of repairing a few minor holes and getting the rust all out it was just filled with fiberglass paste and isopon hence it grew worse and worse. Not sure if I would like to fill up the vents or not, even if i did i would still have to repair about a 40mm piece below this vent, being on the curve thats going to be hard to weld new steel in. Has anyone done this repair before or any tips. http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706

Robbie
Hopefully Rab [] Mark landed down with Davie tonight and we got taking about the exhaust for the car, so we decided that buying an exhaust would be a waste for the car unless the engine was good, so we done what everyone would do on a Sunday evening lol. decided to take the engine apart to see what condition it was in [:0] Marks good clothes did suffer a tad (sorry mark []) Off came the head and the pistons they did seem a tad wobbly [] of come the sump and inspection of the shell bearing soon followed ( hmmmmmmm scratches )[] OooooooooooopS a few cracked piston rings. Think the engine has been worked on before shell bearings a marked 0.25 so the crank has already had its first regrind although it has 2 grinds left in it []. Will have to do a bit more inspecting later to see if the block has been bored out and over sized rings installed, need to try and get my hands on a internal micrometer to see if the bore has been enlarged before Was late when we finished so the wear on the cam will be checked at a later date. Anyone know a good source for engine parts for the 1900 CIH, I think they were the same engine as fitted to the B series right up to 1982. ? Will need rings for sure and may get pistons as they usually aint much dearer than rings alone, also need shell and main bearings, timing chain a gasket set and prob a few other bits as it goes along, Can forsee this hurting the pocket [] http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706
Guest
Does it really have to be a 1.9 Robbie? You could just get a used 2.0 of any type and it will save you a stack of cash on the rebuild. If that gets you on the road, you can then look out for another 1.9 in slower time. Grind the '2.0' off the block casting and only a core-plug-counting anorak (ie me![8D]) will know it's a different engine. I've still got 'Tony's' old 1.9 block (no head), but it had all that ferrous cack through it so I doubt it would be much good, but you can have it if you want it in welcome. Cheers, Joe. Guest
Re: Engine parts. Ferraris Piston Services in Aston, Birmingham. They are the business. One of the lads there is in the club and would be glad to help. He goes by the name of "Nose". His real name is Paul. Their number is 0121-359-8991. He sourced an original exh sys for my hatch last week. They specialise in engine components and gaskets but can get filters / steering gear etc etc. Hope this helps[] Yes, I know it's a hatchback but that's what makes it special

Robbie
Got a new short engine tonight wasnt to bad at £100, cheaper than getting the block and the crank done [] So will hopefully get a look at the head some time next week and see what the cam is like and the cam bearings. Hopefully the solid lifters are fine and the valves just need a little lapping into their seats [^] http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706
Robbie
Been a funny week and a bit with the engine problems and trying to get a bit done to the V8, but the project car still got a right bit of time and attention [] Over this past 2 weeks the engine bay was worked on this took a lot of work to get back to the bare metal and prepare for a presentable finish. The next task on the list is to get the underneath finished so that the work will then turn to the top side of the car. http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706

Guest
Robbie! Robbie
I know what you mean Gaz, its doing my head in at the moment wiring wise, I could channel the wires like the V8 into the chassis legs and hide most of them, on the other hand I want the car standard, but the way opel run the wires is UGLY to say the least [] It will be a few months before I have to make that decision [] The shell of the car is well sorted now, and its solid again, mind you I wish the car had of been as described by the previous owner before i bough it but these things do happen [] The inside of the car is a tad rusty and once the head cloth was taken of, the roof inside was kinda red with surface rust so the next job is to get the inside sanded down and a coat of metal ready then painted. Once the car gets to that stage it should'nt rust for a while, so it can be set to one side for a few months then I can get back to finishing the V8 [] http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706
Robbie
Eekkkkkkkk I have been to busy with work this year, just read my last post on this project and it was in May, Well work has got back to a normal level at the moment and at last some time for the Manta. The underneath has been resprayed and thank goodness no problems with the paint this time with the underneath done and the inner wings finsihed its time to get the wings refitted next, which have been preped and sprayed on the inside earlier this year. Will pop up some more pics once i get the wings fitted and lined up, [^] http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706

Robbie
Felt very guilty about not getting work done to the cars [] but I better get a few things done this month as Dawn (madame vectra) is coming over at the end of the month for an inspection [:0] and bringing me over a door for the A series project. I better lock up the A series V8 [] Now that the upper body work is started it will take me ages and ages to get it ready to spray not my favourite part of restoring, all that sanding [] Plus I have still got some welding to do and not looking forward to repairing the NS rear air vent thats going to take a load of time. might have it preped by xmas lol http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706
Rick-Manta
I know it's a long way off, but will you bring the V8 or possibly the new A to Billing next year?
Robbie
Never thought about that one Rick, I,ll have to ponder over that one for a while, as you say Billing is a long way of but it has a habbit of coming round very fast when your working at the cars, there never seems to be enough time and I for one never seem to get done over the winter what I had planned [] Prob oner of the reasons madame vectra is coming here for a visit at the end of the month, its not me its the V8 Dawn really wants to see lol With a bit of luck one of them will be there if not I,ll enjoy it just as much [^] http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706
