Paul Barrett
got cracking with the wishbones for the rear end this weekend, very time consuming cutting the fishmouths on the tubing to ge them fitting tight, they will be getting a centre diagonal brace of some sorts, but until I source some coilover units I don't know how i want to do it few pics for the toe adjusters, had to slice the tubing to fit the threaded inserts I have, came out well enough all looks a bit rough atmo but will all be getting dressed etc and then blasted up for some epoxy coating comments are criticism welcome! all helps
Paul Barrett
to add, I've tracked down some e46 solid rear discs 10mm thick, correct PCD and look to be same centre bore to the hub I have too, means I can use some Vauxhall astra alloy rear callipers I have sat around as they use 10mm thick discs, and have cable operated parking break function much like vw golfs. Paul Barrett
Picked up the new power plant today, stripped it of its auto kept the essentials, bell housing and flex plate for the starter ring. As for gearbox several options to go for- -supra r154 -supra w58 -maybe getrag 265? -bmw 530d box ( will require welding) cheapest option and one I was considering even with the original Saab idea Edited February 17, 2014 by Paul Barrett
tony g
Nice one paul, you got onto the 8 quick . Just a thought on flywheel. ive learnt that a toyota 3sgte flywheel from a turbo MR2 or celica GT4 can be used. Very slight pcd difference which can be milled to suit. The ring gear on the 3s flywheel will work with V8 but the teeth need a bit of fettling. The starter comes in from the other side on the V8 so the tooth profile at the edges need to be copied onto the 3S. This will make clutch choices a lot easier. If R154 box is used (very expensive) the 3s turbo clutch plate works and If W58 is used the non turbo Mr2 clutch plate will work. I may be able to get a flywheel if you want one. If a whole getrag would work with a bell housing adapter you may invent the next best solution I have a very clever guy near me that can mill and turn anything and Ive used him to make adapter plates and even complete flywheels if you need help here just give me a shout mate. Paul Barrett
Thanks kev! Tony, I may well go for that box, as the Beemer option is looking trickier for not a lot more gain for what I want to achieve initially. Retro Power
found this earlier of a guy using what looks like triple plate with just the original back plate from the auto setup? I'm pretty sure (though not certain of course!) that the flexplate is only there to mount the ring gear on. I think there may be a machined boss in the centre to hold the clutch, with the flexplate centre machined out and fitted to that boss
