Hi folks. Many thanks for everyones help in all my problems & im just posting now for some advice in which way to go on my brake discs.

I have the standard discs & pads & been thinking of either the carlton 2.2 discs & pads with cav gsi calipers as i have seen on some mantas, or do i find some aftermarket drilled & grooved ones either for the manta or even though i doubt it, but i may find drilled & grooved set for the 2.2 carlton maybe?

I have carlton 2.2 vented discs, vectra 1.6 calipers and pads. The discs are about £50-60 and the calipers second hand are between £20-50 second hand. New pads are £20ish. I got Ferodo ones from ebay. I also got some goodrich braided hoses but have not fitted them yet. All the parts bolt straight on with no specialist machining required. I got the idea from Joe a few years ago and its brilliant. His pictures and explanation are far better than mine.

if you do fit the fancy front brake pipes , i found that i needed to replace the original brake pipe end for the right thread size and re-flare for the correct flare . them ol manta brake pipes dont like to be flared again much .

you may want to slice a petrol hose and fit it over the pipe to stop rubbing through .

you might also need to grind off the tab on the caliper to get the pipe going the right direction .

i fitted these ,Audi 80 2.0 16v vented disc made between 08/91-07/92'

It has 256x22mm disc's and the important thing is an offset of 56.5mm (standard manta was 57mm) from Mark gunning on here .mark_gunning@yahoo.co.uk

and vectra calipers and pads bolt in .

Now then Keith, did you get that garage built at last? i hope so because i've been away fighting a recession and building a massive extension on my new house for the last year. Granny is safely tucked up in the warm with her new coat on. (its in the garage with new paint) It just needs minor assembling and its done. Manta is parked up next to it having just got a new clutch. Needs a new roof later in the year but other than that its still alive.

I moved from a bedroom and a half starter home with no garage to a 4 bed semi with a double garage, actually bought the house because it had a double garage - really! All back on track now.

The standard 13" wheels on an A will not fit on with the 256mm discs and calipers. I understand that revolution 13" alloys will fit, but no use if you want to keep it looking original.

I Shug,

I wish to keep the original look or put some wheels from that time like the ronal or a ats but 13''

If i'm not mistake the discs from the carlton 2.2 (or record E 2.2) are 246mm the same size as standard.

This combination from vectra calipers and carlton disc brakes are for 256mm??

Thanks

I really should read properly! Read vectra and assumed. I didn't think the vectra calipers would fit the carlton discs too well. I'm using vectra/cavalier/astra calipers on mine with audi 256mm discs and its a perfect fit.

The carlton discs are smaller so I guess 13" should fit ok.

But still, bigger is better!

The calipers are from a vectra A (1988 - 1995) ?

Ah, in the UK what you call the vectra A was called a cavalier. The vectra B used 256 or 280ish mm discs depending on model, and the cavalier/vectra A higher spec models used 256mm discs. Lower spec models had smaller discs.

Ive just bought some calipers from a 2.2 sri 150. The car is on a X plate. So will i need these audi discs to get a perfect fit as carltons are too small then?

Is that right yes?

What audi discs are they anyway? As in 80,100, A4??

Audi 80 discs from a certain year. I think the vectra 2.2 caliper carriers will be too big tho. You need ones from a 4 stud car. My old 1.8 vectra calipers were too big but the 4 stud vectra ones fit perfectly.

The vectra calipers i used were from a 1.6 R reg vectra. There is a small overlap as the pads are slightly bigger than the discs but it is not a lot and not a problem at all.

Thanks for the info, i check in google and R reg is from 1997 1998 so a vectra B.

From the standard brakes the improve is big ??

I will start searching in the junkyeards to find a vectra calipers and try in my manta smile.gif

Standard brakes would slow the car down if you stood on the pedal in an emergency, these brakes lock the wheels and leave an 11 down the road. Massive improvement. I actually used Mintex pads rather than Ferodo, but that's a minor point and has no difference in effect.

I like the part that leaves a 11 in the road biggrin.gif , in this week i will try to go to a junkyard near by a friend tell me that they have 2 vectra B, any advice to choose the calipers?

Thanks for all

Ive been told its easier to just do a 5 stud conversion. That way you can just stick vectra everything on, maybe even a rear disc conversion as i have some massive sri 150 calipers to go on. Cant put them on yet though as the 14" wheels that i have fitted at the mo are too small

Take hex (allen keys with you) and some snips to cut the brake pipe. Maybe ask the scrap yard if you can return them if they don't work. You can remove them and pump the pedal and see if they move. Push the piston back in with a pipe wrench or water-pump pliers if you don't have the correct tool. I wire-brushed mine and painted them with Hamerite paint.

Is interesting the idea to convert to 5 stud, and more big brakes better, but for now i wish to mantain the 13'' wheel, maibe i convert the rear to disc, i read some where that the astra mk4 rear calipers work perfect.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just bought a pair of calipers and i try in my manta A, the fit is perfect the disk (the solid one) is slight lower but no problem(i will try to find some audi disks to try out).

I try in my 13'' steel wheel and just for some mm don't fit :(

To maintain the 13'' i need to find some wheels that work

Any sugestions?
