Robbie
Back to the topic now before i get to far of track, with a few gallons of thinners used and running low at this stage on rags, hmmmmmmm must get the missus to check the clothes and see whats no good anymore lol. Ok heres where we are at now, some better news than before with all the tin worm [] Front part cleaned down to where the sills should be, and a lot of the original primer still in perfect shape, just some rust to sand down and coat with jenolite. A bit more rust around the rear axle area but nothing a to serious [] Front part of the tunnel looking good not to much there, great to have the underneath grease free it makes the work so much easier apart from the welding and grinding which always gets down your neck and on top of your head lol. Not looking forward to those A posts at this point in time never mind the rest of the welding [] http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706 Please dont shoot me it,s only an opinion not a demand Email robbie @ mantamagic.com (without the spaces)
Joe
That all looks good Robbie. I'll bet you've been floating for days with all those thinners though. Cheers, Joe. Robbie
If the car had of been bad underneath I would have stripped it back to the bare metal, but the car had waxoyl underneath at some point in time and over the years surplas oil from the engine bay lol. This kept the original primer in very good condition so there is no point removing it as its doing its job perfectly, The areas that have some surface rust will all be sanded down and zinc primed, then the whole underneath will get a coat of zinc primer after that it will get a few coats of 2 pack primer which is non porus then coated with stonechip. I have been toying about with the idea of spraying it in 2 pack top coat then stone chipping over it to give it the original look but I'm not sure it will need the 2 pack top coat before the stone chip. At this stage I just want to get it all rust free and coated with the zinc primer then I can start to the welding and make up my mind at a later stage on what will be the best route to take http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706 Please dont shoot me it,s only an opinion not a demand Email robbie @ mantamagic.com (without the spaces)

Robbie
Its nice to see some of the car being in good shape already uncovered enough rust to keep me going for a week of 2 [] The rusty spots underneath have been attacked with the wire cup brush and with emery to get them sanded off, then coated with jenolite to remove any that was left, then coated with Lowe rust. Just got some more to do at the rear of the car then the whole underneath will get a coat of the lowe rust after which it will be 2 packed primed [] http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706 Please dont shoot me it,s only an opinion not a demand Email robbie @ mantamagic.com (without the spaces)
Robbie
Time for a few Jd's tonight I recon been out in the garage from 9am this morning but the car looking a lot better underneath and I now good a good chassis leg again [] underneath coated with lowe rust All the rot cut out and remaining ground down to bare metal then primed with weld through primer, one thing I done after the pic was drill a couple of 6mm holes so the oil can run from inside the chassis leg and get between the skins and stop any further rust.[] side view of the finished chassis leg on the drivers side underneath view Ds arch painted Both rear arches have been sorted and primed. Now the underneath needs done in 2 pack primer but for now it wont rust and its onto more welding for the A posts and sill areas which were shown earlier in a poor state. http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706 Please dont shoot me it,s only an opinion not a demand Email robbie @ mantamagic.com (without the spaces)

Robbie
The car is coming along nicely at the moment [] a couple of weeks of welding and we should have it back to a good solid car again. Ryan my eldest lad who was a billing with me is working on this one as well when hes free, lives a right way away (50 miles)so limited to his odd days off. I always get a good buzz when the welding has finished on the car just knowing the car is 100% solid [] http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706 Please dont shoot me it,s only an opinion not a demand Email robbie @ mantamagic.com (without the spaces)
MantaMad
Its been a day or 2 since I last looked at this thread, cannot believe the amount of work thats been done. That is good going Robbie. Robbie
On a brighter note before we get stuck into the major welding on the the heres some pics of the good areas. Lucky enough inside the boot had been done with waxoyl so the rear panel was good and the joint to the floor was perfect. Spare tyre well needs some attention. The arches on both sides have NO blisters again due to the quarter panels having waxoyl/ Dinitrol on the inside, the lips are also very good on both arches the odd small bit to replace at the bottom on each side [] The front panel is in really excellent condition, both light housings are mint and no work needing done around these areas also the lower panel is in excellent condition. Crossmember behind the front panel does need repaired in a few places.HMMmmmmmmmmmm make that chopped out and a new one in [] Not the best picture but the battery tray has no holes just some pitting. Washer bottle area looks good as well and from inside the car it seems fine, will remove the sound deading just to make sure it 100% Even with the rust on the car so far there are quite a few areas where the car should have rusted being a manta but they are fine [] http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706 Please dont shoot me it,s only an opinion not a demand Email robbie @ mantamagic.com (without the spaces)

Robbie
I dunno this is my first B [:I] will get a better pic of it when I have time, once the dash/ heater matrix is all removed [] Forgot the inside floor earlier have the rest on the interior stripped out now so I could get a good look at the floors [] Got the air Chisel out and removed the sound deading on both sides. The floor of the car is in really good condition, not one hole, just some light surface rust where the water come in from the bulkhead at the side, but they will be cut above the jacking points anyway to see whats inside them, then they will be cleaned out and done with Jenolite and a good zinc primer before new tops going on. http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706 Please dont shoot me it,s only an opinion not a demand Email robbie @ mantamagic.com (without the spaces)
MrCarlos
Think that seam on the battery tray is normal just covered in seam sealer on most cars. MrCarlos
OK here's some shots of my sadly recently departed & I'm still grieving for Exclusive Coupe in the battery tray dept (before & after waxoyl treatment) Does look like a seam on both mine & Robbies car.... MantaMad
quote:Originally posted by mantadoc Ahh you see what I mean then? Does look like a seam doesn't it? And nope not covered by sealer on others, the whole bit with the nut in to locate the battery and the tray are in one. One row of spot welds onto the vertical bulkhead panel flange and the foremost on to the inner wing..... normally Say what you like it's still a 1991 Manta id="quote">id="quote"> I'm with you on this, looks almost like a new smaller tray sitting on top of the original. midasmesh
Is it not just the raised parts of the tray causing the ilusion of a seam. Because you have the 2 raised bits at the back and then the raised bit at the front of the tray which is behind the bolt hole, and these raised bits are what the battery sits on so there is a gap under the battery. If i'm wrong i'm wrong but thats what the picture looks like to me. Midasmesh giving it rear wheel action in the Staffordshire Moorlands. omoc 5285 Based in Leek near to Alton Towers.
