Insuring My Manta

I need to insure my Hatch and the cheapest quote so far is £907.00. One question though, instead of square headlights mine has twin Cibie lights in and a non original Irmscher steering wheel but other than that it is completely original. Does this mean they class mine as modified or can I put it down as original?

Personally I would say it's original condition/unmodified, especially if that's the best price you can get as that's a rip off. They're still original Manta headlamps and the wheel is too, they're just from a different year. This cover, I assume, isn't a specialist 'agreed valuation' or one tailored for classics, which would mean, no matter what kind of accident you have fault or non-fault, the car would be written off, so you may wish to look at other avenues than conventional insurance.

You would find that mentioning slight changes make no difference to a £160 policy like I had, but for one near £1000, it strangely would. Typically car insurance is actually not insurance for the car, it's insurance against your legal liability in an accident, weird huh!?

Hi,

You will need to declare any changes to the vehicle as modifications, however as mentioned previously with a specialist insurer you will often see no increase for minor modifications.

Please feel free to give us a try, if you wanted to PM me your details I would be happy to arrange a call back from our quotes team.

Kind regards,

Dan.

I saw no increase with my manta having the twin lights fitted. But i did declare them!!

What i do need to do though is tell Adrain Flux that i've changed my steering wheel from a modified unit back to standard!!

Thanks

Hi jack,

How old are you, how many ncb do you have and have you had any accidents?

I am 22 1 year NCB and never had an accident. I need an insurer who can give me good mileage, unlimited mileage would be the best thing. Got an email back from Adrian Flux with a provisional quote for £761.96. Will get a callback from Adrian Flux I just hope they can offer me good mileage.

You want to battle between at least 2 to get the lowest price. You wont be able to get unlimited miles mate if you do you will pay through the nose for it. You want to get about 10000- 12000 miles.

What's this clause these insurance people have regarding a second car, one company told me that they wouldn't insure my cavalier because I didn't have the use of a second car, what has it got to do with them? What difference does it make if I only have one car? I don't do over 3,000 miles a year, so what would I need two cars for, they must think we are all stinking with money like they are, I wonder if they know that I drove all the way to Cardiff and back last week, thousands of miles, well about 80 or there abouts!!

Never really heard that one before Julian and thinking about it I cant really understand why you couldnt get an insurance quote because you dont have a second car. I would get myself a second Manta if I could and I have enough for one but I know that my current Manta will need the money instead at the rate things are happening with it. I have never even heard of that second car thing before ever so I have no idea.

Sadly, the difference here is that Jack is 22 and using his Manta as his everyday road car. For most of us, we're using our Manta's as classics and after Classic car insurance, which by it's nature is a lot cheaper and usually limited mileage. I too only pay just over £100 a year with RH Insurance, but these prices are irrelevant in this instance as age and mileage will go against Jack sadly.

Do shop around Jack, the price from Adrian Flux seems probably about right given your circumstances tbh. But you might shave a bit off that by making more calls. Also worth trying a good broker, like we all used to do before the days of buying direct. Let them do the donkey work for you and see what they come up with.

Julian, I suspect the question about a second car is for the same reasons, if you're looking for Classic Car insurance, by it's nature it's for weekend toys, not everyday vehicles. But as your annual mileage is low, you might be able to talk to them and explain. Most decent classic car insurers will be able to underwrite properly, rather than just pricing my the majority!

If I were in your shoes, I'd not even mention anything other than the car being standard. Some people do get stupid over this sort of thing, to the best of any non Manta experts knowledge, those are standard Manta items and the fact that they are only standard on the exact same car 2-3 years later than yours is irrelevant to the cover they'll be providing; you will not get any of these parts repaired should they become accident damaged. It's a mis-conception that it's in anyway illegal or invalidating, they operator wouldn't have a clue what you're on about if you start trying to explain "well the exclusive's were fitted with irmscher lights and steering wheels but these didn't come out until 1987, mine is an 84/85 model, which blah blah.." all they'll put is modified car and you'll pay more than you have to. The timing has been altered from standard on all road going mantas now that leaded fuel has been phased out, GM approved standard exhaust systems for Manta's haven't been available since early 2000's, are you using GM spark plugs? GM pads/disks/shoes? Uniroyal Rainsport tyres? These are modifcations from standard, nobody mentions them.

As for getting the best price, use all the price comparison sites incuding the Google one https://www.google.co.uk/compare/carinsurance/ and put your mobile number on all the forms you fill in. You'll soon get people phoning you up trying to sell you a policy and tell them they've quoted too much and you're looking for cheaper, they'll magically get you a better price saying they've waivered admin fees and give you a slightly higher excess, which doesn't matter too much as unfortunately if you're involved in an accident you won't get your £3500 back (or whatever you paid for it) as car insurance isn't quite what it says on the tin.

1 simple solution to this , get yourself a little £300 1litre runarond to build your NCB (thats what  the second car thing is all about)......get your dad to insure the manta £150 borrow  it when you want (every wk/end)....It all really  depends on how long do intend on being a mantaman 10k a year just think of all the mods. you,d have  to make in 3-4 years to keep it going .!!!..I got the manta bug in1979 always had one done the second car thing for the ncb....long story short,, 34  years later 2 manta,s both on classic insurance 5k miles each one,, driven alternatley thru out the year...COST PER YEAR!! ( less than insuring standard family car ). :thumbup HAPPY DAYS think future jack lots of mantas goin to the wall which means the value of yours goes up..

Sticking with the Manta as an everyday and I have waited forever to have my own Manta and I could not live with any of my parents insuring it for themselves and me using it for weekends. I have finally got my first Manta and I was born to be a Manta man forever :D and I dont think I could emotionally bare to stop using it during certain months. I think 20k a year as a minimum I would say 10k a year is a low amount of miles I mean some people do more than that a year just to go to work and back. Especially during the summer when I can get out alot more I will do loads of driving in it and I have been putting 20k a year on the insurance forms when filling them out.

The only thing I would like to know is mine is not on original springs as its on Spax all round from when I bought it its just all the details like putting Owners Club stickers in the windows etc as on one insurance form I filled out it was asking whether or not I had stickers on it! The only things my Manta has that are no standard are the Cibie lights with Irmscher Bezels, Spax springs and Irmscher steering wheel which is going to be changed for a mint Original I have got myself and obviously I am changing my exhaust system to a Sportex and standard ones are impossible to find. What do you think about putting it down as Original/unmodified?

my 1.8gt costs me £109 a year fully comp limited 5k mileage.with all mods declared including.twin lights.spax and those huge 16 inch staggered alloys.the mods actually added nothing on to the premium price, but that's on a classic policy and you wont get classic ins jack.are you sure your going to do 20k a year?remember the more miles you do increases the policy price as you are at a higher risk of being involved in an accident. 75 per cent more than declaring 5 k

Ah, the spax kit, that's slightly different given my earlier statement. I take it, the car is lower than the OE springs? A GTE did have gas shocks as standard (okay it was only one pair, but again, to the best of any non-experts knowledge) and they were lower than the GT/Berlinetta, the exhaust is arguablely just a replacement. All this does seem to add up to why your premium quotes are so high.

Wasn't the car sold to you as standard or near original condition?

As for the mileage, don't worry, just put 10,000 a year to get the cover, then only if and when you do go over this limit, phone the insurers and tell them. You may as well just pay a fee for it IF you go over, not pay a fortune on your premium incase you do over that amount ...some might suggest taking the speedo cable off your gearbox when you do a long trip to stop your odometre from going up and use the a sat nav speedo, don't do that though as that would be very naughty ... ;)

When we had our first mantas and were using them everyday my partners car was rear ended by a mondeo. The bumper and rear panel needed replacing.

We were just using normal insurance companies at the time as we couldn't afford second cars then.

We had to fight with them to get the car repaired but the insurance assessor that came out knew everything there was to know about the manta GTE and went through the car properly. Bearing in mind this accident wasn't even our fault and the other party had admitted liability.

So despite what advice you get please do declare all your mods. As maybe the assessor who looks at your car wont know. Or maybe he will be like the one who came to look at ours and knew more about mantas than we did!!

I declared all the mods to the hatch I bought recently, but I did point out the items I couldn't be sure of, the quad lights being an example. Original or not? I don't know, but I don't want that to be an argument when I want my insurance company to pay out!

You pay your money and take your chance.

I think what I will do is ring Adrian Flux up and tell them exactly what has been done to my Manta like the lights etc. For convienience I was hoping to just list it as standard as everyone things I should do that but I dont want them to put it down as a modified car when it isnt one. Still not sure what to do...

When I had my Manta insured, forget who with, it was okay to use other parts so long as they were from the same model and made specially for the car, i.e. using the later grey recaro seats instead of the factory fitted check ones. Even when I had the 2.2 fitted, it added pennies to the cost of the insurance (back to the original 2.0 now).

They don't class my manta as modified because of the lights. I told them I do not know if they are standard or not. But they have it on record that they are fitted. No extra cost!!

I also told them the car has a standard manta GTE interior fitted to a 1.8s. Again, no extra charge, but it is noted on the insurance details.

So if I do have to make a claim there is nothing on the car they could get funny about.

Just because you tell them something is fitted doesn't mean it will cost more. Just make sure you point out that it is a standard part, but it might not have been fitted to yours from new.

Whatever you tell them and however much you pay, if you have an accident, fault or not, you will not get anywhere near the amount you paid for the car back. If you can't afford or find a specialist classic car, agreed valuation policy, which allows limited mileage and therefore suitable for your daily use, then there is no point in worrying about it. It's entirely your call and listen to whatever you think is the best way to go about it, but if I were you, just get the cheapest cover you can find as it'll be shit cover no matter what, if you tell them it's modified/changed, it'll be expensive and shit.

Under 25's get shafted with motoring costs, it's a fact of life and has got worse as time has moved on. 17-20's usually have no choice but to lie, they get parents or older people to insure their car, with them as a named driver. Yes, this runs the risk of not getting the £150 for your 15 year old Rover 200 with all the 'ifs' and 'buts', what other choice do most have? *

* Rhetorical question
