gunman
cheers for the compliment delboy. I am afraid the car wont make it to billing this year, the family holiday is taking priority I'm afraid, I'll be there in the audi and caravan (wife and kids too) BUT...you never know, its a fair while off yet[8D] If what I say can be taken in 2 ways and one of those ways get you angry....I meant it the other way OMOC 5817
gunman
Oh, and just a note for anyone thinking of starting such a task in a single garage. gunman
Just thought I'd pop up a post to let you all know I'm still working on this yoke[]. Not much interesting to report I'm afraid, just boring work of sanding, painting , more sanding and buffing. I have both doors and the bootlid finished now. Very frustrating work, the more I shine the panels, the more small blemishes I see. It can get very frustrating.[!] I'll post up some more pics when I get the chance. Manta Mal
Hi Gunman, Just read through your whole project to date, very impressive amount of work you have done, metal fabrication, welding and paint spraying etc, looks the great, all done in a small garage![8D] I have tried to spray cars in a single garage a few times before, spent 2 hours, sweeping and cleaning the garage out. Still got dust in the paint. I have had far more success in spraying outside, but the weather had to be perfect.....dry, not too hot and zero wind speed, can take months to get the right day and by chance be off work at the same time. Thats why I'm thinking of having my current 'A' project, sprayed in a paint shop. Mal.....OMOC #6022 Start your Manta restoration today........ before it's too late! gunman
Not overly worried about the dust, I've got dust in the bootlid and doors, It cuts out well enough. when I come to spray the main shell the floor, walls and cieling will be lined with clear plastic. May not stop dust but may help a bit[]. entwistlecymru
If you go to a paint specialist they can sell you polythene sheeting with a static charge which should attract dust etc. Dampen the floor with a watering can too. Also a little tip a mate showed me was to keep a tweezers with a magnifying glass mounted to them handy. If any bugs land in the paint you can pick them off and then blow out the marks in the paint with your gun OMOC #5826..... 79 SRB coupe - 'interesting project', 79 Cav saloon - 16v sleeper, 1989 Senator CD - I've been converted! gunman
Just spent 3 hours tonight rubbing and buffing (not as much fun as it may sound[][]). Got the bootlid finished. The paint finish got quite a few fisheyes in it so it took a lot of rubbing down. Its not perfect but its better than I expected as I dont actually have a clue what I'm doing[][][] It's taking on average about a week per panel at the moment, not what I'd hoped for, but still I'll get there. Heres a couple of pics of the finished bootlid, now before anyone points it out the spoiler is just in primer, it will be painted off the car, just set it on as the area under the spoiler isnt buffed (I've enough necessary things to be at[]): . misterconyers
Nice one Gunman, good to see someone else is hard at work on their hatch! [] Nothing wrong with painting in your garage if its not too cold, thats how I plan to do mine when the time comes. Painted my Chavalier for the practice, like. rapid Chavalier respray action! Looks o.k too (apart from a few runs because I was drunk and it was cold) and if I could be bothered to cut the laquer back! Its all worth it in the end ! Kevin Abbott
Gunman, that paint looks pretty goddam flat to me[] Do you know you can get an addative that says it kills fish eyes? Fish eye was a big problem last time i painted, i'd tack ragged after the base but didn't panel wipe. it took a lot flatting and cutting back but was ok in the end. Good luck Kev Many A Night Tinkering About OMOC 4076
gunman
I'll have yo investigate this anti fish eye stuff[^]. I had been getting quite serious orange peel so I've been told to thin the paint a bit more. I hope it helps. What I have learned is that witrh 2 pack (if you have enought coats) you can fix most problems, or at least make them look better[]. entwistlecymru
Looks wicked - very flat and shiny! Have you been using latex gloves Gunman? That caused fish eyes on my Cav. The only way to clear it is to use panel wipe as well as the tack rags OMOC #5826..... 79 SRB coupe - 'interesting project', 79 Cav saloon - 16v sleeper, 1989 Senator CD - I've been converted! gunman
No latex gloves here I'm afraid. I did use panel wipe and then tak rags. I'm not sure if this is the right way round, could a tak cloth leave a residue? Then again could you leave dust off the cloth with the panel wipe? All trial and error I'm afraid[]. Guest
I like your spray shop Mark....[] I've got all the kit to paint but still seem to end up with aerosols. Your results look most impressive. gunman
Joe, Dont use aerosols, they are crap IMO[:I]. The paint is too thin and the atomisation too coarse[!]. I can never use them right[V]. Anyways, I am just back in from the garage, the plan is to have all the bits off the car sprayed by this time next week (not including rubbing/buffing). It was a lovely day so I was able to push the car outside and also do some of the prep out there too.[^] Got the front air dam and sill extinsion in primer. I have the spoiler and arch extensions in primer too so there may be a big session of spraying this evening[8D]. heres a couple of pics (do you like my stand for the air dam?[]) If what I say can be taken in 2 ways and one of those ways get you angry....I meant it the other way OMOC 5817

gunman
Ok, thats the spoiler, side skirts, arch exts and front bumper done. Something near my bech is causing fish eyes in the paint. Last night I hung the arch exts up from the ceiling and put the spoiler on the bench (bench covered with clear poly). Added in the elasticiser and began to spray. Now I used the same paint, the same panel wipe/cloth and the same tak rag. The arch exts are mint (could put them on the car without buffing but they'd be better than the rest of it[8D]) but the spoiler got mad fisheyes esp at one side. I took a cocktail stick and touced in the eyes but i have never flatted and buffed a rubber spoiler with elastisier. Can you do such a thing? Sprayed the front bumper and side skirts tonight away from the bench and there are no probs (except some dust on the bumper), got very minor orange peel but better thanti was getting. not sure how this lot will turn out[] If what I say can be taken in 2 ways and one of those ways get you angry....I meant it the other way OMOC 5817
gunman
I've learned 2 important things this evening: 1:) G10 is the DADDY. couldnt get a good gloss finish with G3 2:) Never work at the car when you're knackered. Was working at a door this evening (in a daze), THE BLOODY THING ONLY FELL OF THE BENCH. Landed along the bottom edge and bent both lower corners back up.[][!][!][!] I've now them 'fettled' back down and filled them. door has to be resprayed now. The only good thing is that I wasnt happy with the finish anyway and my spraying is definatley better now so it may be better in the long run. Felt like killing something tonight tho[!]. gunman
OK Guys this is still going on and the long awaited day has arrived![^] Tomorrow the shell sees some colour. All off the car panels are done except the bonnet. I have a problem spraying in the single garage but no way its gonna beat me now. Problem is I use 2 compressors, one for the gun and one for the air fed, now whats the chances I'm gonna avoid hitting the car with a hose?[:I]. heres the car as it sits this evening: The ceiling has been lined with clear poly: The floor has been brushed 4 times today (3 of them were done wet). The air fed mask has been tested and ready: How will I avoid rubbing this hose in the paint? A series of hooks on the ceiling to hook the hose into as I go araound I'm hoping[8D]. The extraction system[] is ready: The gun is ready: More importantly, the shell is ready. Hoping the gun hose wont rub as the car is about 18" off the floor on stands to allow me paint the sills, I've tested this evening and it should be OK. We'll see how tomorrow goes I reckon[8)].
