Paul Barrett
lead flashing then seal it as far away from flue as poss?
opelmantagsi
NO! I was CORGI gas registered when I was in the UK and do construction work involving flues and chimneys on timber frame construction in NZ you will need to at least triple skin that flue where it passes through the roof make some Z profiles up and pop them on the flue, to create a 25mm gap and wrap that with sheet metal do the same again to that so you end up with two sleeves where it goes through the roof so if the flue is 100mm dia then you need a 150 sleeve and a 200 sleeve say 300mm long get a 300mm deck tight flashing a 100 inside dia x 350 outside dia storm collar the idea is there is an air gap between the flue inner and outser sleeves so the gheat being transmitted is lost out through the underside of the storm collar I can do you a sketch if you want to send me your e-mail details
opelscott22
Thanks for the replies! Derek, I was thinking something along those lines. Im amazed how hot the flue gets up there! Would it be wise to fit an upside down storm collar to the inside just before the roof? Reason Im thinking this is that most of the heat will escape through the air gap otherwise as this unit works by radiating heat (rather than using a fan), and the collar would deflect the warm air up the roof. Thanks for putting me onto the decktite flashings, thats exactly what Im after...dont worry though, I wont run the heater again until its sorted! Scott. opelmantagsi
You could do a twin skin and Pack the gap with ceramic fibre type insulation or rock wool at a push but ceramic is better. Make sure the timber is 50mm clear of the outer sleeve. This would be less work than triple skin and get over the draft problem you mention. But the outer skin you make, try and get it rolled from 1.2mm galv sheet. You can use thinner gauges if going triple skin. So If your putting one sleeve round the single skin flue you have there go with at least 50mm gap, packed with ceramic wool or rock wool. 250mm either side of the roofing (so a 500mm long sleeve) Use mastic or polymer type sealers on the dektite. Not silicone based sealers, they are shite and won't stand the test of time. Edited January 14, 2013 by opelmantagsi
opelscott22
Finally got a bit of time at home so Ive been busy in the garage. I had a few stainless exhaust flanges from previous projects and Ive got a good stock of mandrel bends so I set about making an exhaust manifold to suit the car. I forgot to take any measurements from the shell before I sent the car to paint so Ive had a rough guess where the collector will end up from looking at pictures. (google images is a savior at times!) Ive done the collector and two primaries, not bad progress for a day! The primaries will end up slightly different lengths but as this isnt a race car Im not fussed. Should be a nice bunch of bananas when Im done.
opelmantagsi
Love it! Look forward to more progress pics.
Retro Power
if you want to PM me tomorrow I can take some measurements for you.......that collector looks too far from the block in the pics, I may be wrong but its best to find out early on! Don't underestimate how tight a fit it is!! Edited March 1, 2013 by Retro Power
opelscott22
That would be great, Ive got it at 1/4" from the block but its a 2.5" collector outlet... Scott
shaggy
Well Scott thats it in the paint shop now, i was in tonight and saw it sitting to be started to.
Devil Fish
Its so awesome when you get to see your car all in one colour for the first time! Looking forward to the next update... Edited March 7, 2013 by Devil Fish
opelscott22
Hi Dave, I was round there last night as I was down visiting mates. Theyve got one side prepped, still the doors, bonnet, roof and other side to do. Agreed a date of mid April to get the car back, so fingers crossed! Devil Fish, Im really looking forward to getting this back, Ive been finishing all the bits to build the car so it shouldnt take too long to build the car. Ive been distracted with doing my kitchen and Im off working again on sunday so there wont be any progress for a while. Scott.
opelscott22
Wee bit of progress on the car, new headlining made in black perforated PVC and fitted. Took a while to get it wrinkle free, you have to really stretch it! ive done a few headlinings in old cars now, viva's and escorts mainly. The Manta is pretty tricky!! opelmantagsi
Manta and Adidas Samba, what a winning combination :-)
stradacab
Nice job on the headliner. when you have the sun visors, grab handles, screens in etc that will tighten it up even more and it will look the biz
opelscott22
Derek, Ive practically worn Sambas since I was a kid. Theres no other option!! Thanks, Im pretty pleased with how its worked out. Ive trimmed the visors too, might do those again though as theyre a bit baggy...didnt really just want to paint them black. Ive used the vinyl paint before but I find it a bit too shiny. Im offshore again just now but Ill be doing a bit more when I get back. (still havent got any of the panels back from the painters.) Talking of the painter, now the paint has settled and shrunk a bit, theres loads of sanding marks and other imperfections appeared on the roof. Im not too pleased about it so I might end up repainting it at some point. Ill be doing it myself though, never going back to any paint shop.... opelscott22
Well, spent a bit of time in the garage today. Finally got all my bits back from the painters (been nearly a year!!). Ive had a go at fitting the bootlid and spoiler today, the spoiler is a genuine 400 item was brand new and unused. Im having problems with it though, doesnt fit worth a S##T!!! Really not happy with it, Ive drilled the holes for it so might be an issue fitting a normal one back on... Anyone come across this before? Novasportc550
That looks a very bad fit there chum....
Autocrosser
Looks like the spoiler end caps have been distorted in storage. As for a fix, I haven't got the foggiest mate but it would be a real shame to leave it like that considering the rest of the car is perfect
opelscott22
Im not sure about the rest of the car being perfect but that spoiler is definitely not staying on there. Id be better off getting a fiberglass one, would probably fit better and at least you can do something with it. Ive got no idea how to fix it, looks like its been stored stood up on its end? Anybody got a GTE spoiler going spare?
Kevin Abbott
Hope you can get it sorted. The exclusive spoiler and the genuine 400 type fit in different places. I'm having the same issue regarding fitment as I had on the car an exclusive one, so holes in the boot lid for that. The sides fit ok but the boot holes are a mile off. If I keep the 400 one on and drill the new boot lid for that and I dont like the fit, then I've screwed a brand new boot lid. I have a GTE spoiler you can have, It's been stored correctly. You already know you will have to have the car repainted if you take the 3 piece off Trevor Lewis once told me that if you immerse a 3 piece into a hot bath the elastic memory fixes the standard droop in the middle bit. This may or may not work as I have never tried it and it may only work in that instance. I want a carbon one like that 400 for sale in Ireland has on it
opelscott22
Thanks for that Kev, Ive sent you a PM. Ive been thinking about selling this as an ongoing project, new job and selling the house means its nearing the bottom of the priority list just now. Anybody know what I should realistically ask for it as it stands?
steve price
you could do away with the studs on the spoiler and bond it on using tiger seal or similar, line it up where you get the best fit and tape it down for the night, drastic but an option, will work have done it my self, scott you using that exc coupe bumper i gave you [monaco blue] steve
opelscott22
Hi Steve, the bumper is now fitted to the car, thanks!! Im not sure Id be able to glue the spoiler in place that way, I might try it though if it gets to that stage, seems a shame to cut the brand new studs off! Scott. Retro Power
They all fit like sh** The one with the carbon lip fits even more like sh** than any other!!! Trust me, we've fitted one, our customer has the biggest bill to prove it, and the moulds it was made in may as well have been run over for how good they are. We had to reshape most of it, and there were marks in the clear gelcoat over the carbon, which were impossible to remove, so we ended up virtually remaking it, then painting it black, having the lip hydrodipped in carbon print, and then lacquered, then painting the rest of it white. prob cost over £1500 by the time it was done. Angry was not the word for it! When somebody finds a spoiler that fits, let me know!! Only one I've ever seen that has was a brand new, old stock exclusive one! How I wish we had taken a mould off that!!! Edited November 26, 2013 by Retro Power
opelscott22
That was whats annoyed me about that spoiler, it was a brand new old stock one! I think its been stored on its end and got distorted at somepoint, reall shame really. Ive had a bit of time on the car today and got a fair bit done. Both doors now fitted, wings aligned and sills fitted. Ive also fitted the Capri indicators to the front bumper and got that lined up and fitted. Ive fitted the rear quarter glass and the interior quarter panels as the fabric gets tucked under the glass seal. Im still waiting for my mate to drop off my engine crane so I can get the motor fitted, cant wait for that bit!
