Welcome to the Forum Tim.

sorry can't help with the question, specifically. but subtle mods would usually be lighten and balance bottom end, slight port porting (and possibly larger valves fitted), maybe a camshaft change. Do you have any evidence like a receipt or something?

2.2 head is a good upgrade to std unit, so that more than likely means the injection plenum will be the 2.2 unit too as the ports are higher than the 2.0 . Don't recognise the cam designation, but if it has gaps specified then it's on solid followers so will be better than the Kent op214. Have you checked the engine number? Maybe it is a 2.2 lump.

The German firm "Mantzel" uses always a "M" and a number on their cams. Got a catalogue of 1988 and I can find M15; M16; M17 and M22 made for CIH engines.

I googled that firm "Torque devolepments" and they still excist.

Evening Jess

I have a plate, attached to the l/hand front strut top,  with a date (Nov 89) and listing Capacity (2.2), Head (X Pack) and Cam number ( M145)

plus timing & valve clearance

If you hadn't mentioned 'Torque Developments' I would have said it might have been modified in a similar fashion to what Blydenstein did back in the 80's. Sounds very similar what with the 2.2 head and uprated cam.

Welcome to the club Tim. Mark at Torque developments  started importing "Mantzel" tuning parts in the 80s/90s including for the 2.7 engine conversion. If I recall correctly ( I have 3 of his camshafts somewhere), he continued to use hydraulic lifters with his cams....some of his conversions were tested by magazines. I remember a 2.2 being included, and the tester claimed it was as good as the 2.7 conversion.....He also fitted the supercharger to Richard Lamb's (ERL) 3.0 Mantzel wide body Manta...I have a copy of the mag somewhere.....it will be interesting to see the reg of the 2.2.

Thank you all, for the input

I did ring Mark today,  seams its a 2.2 Block, Big Valve head with solid lifters and uprated cam

Picking the car up at the weekend, so will know more then, and see how i can post pictures here, with the TD plate etc

This is the magazine featuring Torque Development's tuning parts. They tested a 2.2 Manta, reg number D265 NKE ......interestingly the 2.2 and 2.7 had the same 160bhp...good read over 4 pages...mentions the X pack head spec option...plus suspension options from Magard...

both my 2.7 88 Exclusive couple and my best mate's 80 srb coupe 2.2 CIH's were built at Torque Developments; dont know how much my mate's conversion cost, as he had his done about a year before mine, but the total bill for mine, (which was carried out in 96), was £4995. this felt steep at the time, but as the work on my mates 2.2 was excellent, and he's a manta nut, I decided to go ahead as the standard 2.0 performance couldnt compare. he runs twin 40 Weber carbs and I EFI.

I have JE pistons and rods, along with a 2nd hand Mantzel crank-which needed extensive regrounding, as it was in a state.(the JE's from the US were more easily available than Mahle's at the time, but were expensive).

I can say performance of both engines feels similar, although I have more torque.

40s with the 36mm chokes is a bit on the small side for a 2,2 really, so your probably about right power wise. He could do with 45 Jenveys and full ign map to unleash it lol.

But yeah, 5K mod would gave been sone serious investment back in mid 90s 😎

twin 40's was all the could afford at the time, and along with their fast road cam, he was, (and still is), happy enough wih the performance. he's since swapped to their milder cam, (so its not as revvy), as it kept failing the MOT on emissions at the time.

i still have the same fast road cam in mine.

its GM Pineapple yellow Pete; i was going to repaint it the original Monaco Blue, but a late 90's Astra of that colour pulled up alongside me one day, and i was hooked. I intend to repaint with the same colour later this year, funds permitting.
