Robbie
One wing on and the car sure isn't looking to good at the moment a mixture of black burgundy and a skim of isopon [] It,s normally at this stage you wonder why you took a car apart that on the surface looked kinda ok [] http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706
Robbie
Ok heres a few more pics on the car this is the stage we are at now. Still a long way to go but every little helps. Almost every bit of welding has been completed on the car apart from a new section that has to be welded around the rear air vent which I hope to get sorted in the next week. Got the drivers side wing bolted back on and sealed then sanded it down and filled any low spots, should be ready for the first coat of primer soon. Picture quality isnt to good sorry [] The front valance lip was totally eaten away in a few places this had to be rebuilt as pictured below Most of the front valance lower part has been cut away the main reason for this is to gain access behind it at the seam join to the upper part. This is where all the water gets at the join then causes the blisters of rust at the front, the rear seam was sandblasted then coated with jenoilite, and several good coats of rust primer, Once that was done the whole rear seams was fiberglassed to stop any futher ingress of water into the seam. Cutting away the front valance like this still allows perfect fitting of the broadspeed turbo spoiler Hopefully over the weekend or next week will see the front of the car completed and ready to primer, then I hope to get the sides of the car done. Think i need to hold a rubbing down party with loads of beer to get this speeded up, Anyone want a pint or 10 [^][][^] http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706

Robbie
Going to be another long while to get it finished rab lol. Well the good news is all the welding is finished, last bit to do was the rear air vent which was rotten and was cut out a while back. New section was shaped and put into the car, took ages as I had to tack it then leave the car until cold again and keep doing that till it was done, was afraid of the rear quarter warping as its quite thin [] Back to rubbing down now and getting the car ready to spray the first 2 coats of primer on, http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706
opel2000
Seems only five mins ago when I was up to my neck in all this stuff Robbie. But was sat at my pc the other night clicking through some of the many pics I took of my V8 through its various stages of dis-repair/rebuild Was quite shocking to see just how bad it was, actually forgot about a lot of the work done on it. Then when the finished item is sat right outside the window next to my pc, I thought to myself........ Was well worth the bother. They say pride is one of the Seven deadly sins, but cannot think why, pride in ones work is what keeps us all doing a good job, and feeling proud keeps us motivated. Good looking work Robbie, hope you are feeling proud. Robbie
Cheers Clive, duno about proud at the moment just spent the last 5 hrs rubbing down at the shell and tmw will be a full day I think then it should be ready to pop the first few coats of primer onto. After I get it masked of on Sunday, masking will take ages like the white V8 because the whole underneath and wheel arches has to be masked of as well to stop any over spray getting in there. Leaving the boot bonnet spoiler and door until I get the shell top coated, Dawn has the other door for the car but can,t make it over to the show she was going to so that will be sorted at a later date I hope, don,t think the boys in Blue would appreciate a door of the car [] Must admit like you when you do a whole car from start to finsih there is something special about it apart from the couple of 1000 hrs that goes into it but it gives you that warm fuzzy feeling. Just out of curosity I decided to keep an excel file on the black one, A page on every part material bought for the car and one page on the man hrs, ITS SCAREY at the moment never mind when the car is finsihed, any wonder why some of the specialist restoration companies can charge up to 100k for a total bare shell restoration priced at £25 per/hr plus materials. I actually can,t believe how much we spend on things we never think about, thinners , sandpaper, wirebrushes, stonechip, drill bits, screws etc At the moment which includes the car & trip across the pond to get it, the paint to spray the car and a recon short engine the car costs £2,642.70 and a cool 724 hrs labour, most of the labour to date was on the welding up of the car and the job of totally stripping the underneath of the car and getting it ready to 2 pack. [] £25 a hr for the labour would be a cool £18.100 [] http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706

Robbie
Hi Pete going to do the car Black, 2 reasons for doing that one being I may build a broadspeed replica with it and if not Black is the only colour that half keeps the flowing rear lines of the A with a Vinyl roof. Guest
y'know I just realised thre figures you gave for time 'n' money were for a car you described as "Mint" in your first sentence. God knows how much it would have been for a basket case/scrap yard save. *shudder* OMOC 5885 How to post Images
Robbie
It sure wasnt what I would call mint Pete thats more or less how it was described to me as I could not see it first hand without the boat trip across the pond. Once there I was in the situation either return home with no car and be £500 out of pocket with expenses or bite the bullet and restore it. In saying that the car was by no means a basket case it was very repairable at this stage but another year or 2 outside and it would of been a scrap job or a seriously expensive restoration. The main problem with the A series and the B is now heading fast that road is the price of repair panels. For anyone thinking of restoring a basket case lets give a few examples of panel prices [] These are dr manta prices but there isnt many places left the have these panels unless u find some tucked away in a loft. Sills are cheap at around £20 complete front panel £705 lower valance £134 bonnet £208 gm wing £361 jacking point £30 spare wheel well £55 and the list goes on etc as he can supply nearly every panel there is , I know at the moment his stock of wings is low think he has only about 7 left. The A series like the B series mechanically isnt expensive its just the body. Thats why I tend to bare shell strip the cars and try to remove all rust so that problem wont arrise for a long time. When you see the prices of wings it pays to remove them and strip the inside of the wing and give them the full works so they dont rust from the inside out as all wings do. http://www.mantamagic.com OMOC N,Ireland Rep id="blue"> OMOC 5706
mantaray
I Know what you meen Robbie. When i did the V6 conversion on my A, I keeped a running total of cost and it rearly is scarry. In total it cost me £5347 and that was just for the engine conversion. If I'd know that at the start it would never have hapened.[] Chris Membership Sec.
