Quarter-Life-Crisis
While my little beauty is off the road getting some surgery done, i thought id get myself a little run-a-round for nipping down the shops in, and such like. I needed a car that was newish, small, economical, easy to manoeuvre and if it got the odd scrape it wouldn't matter. What did i get then, corsa? nova? not a metro? I got one of these...... 3.0 litre V6 Auto (18mpg) Ok not an Opel or even a Vauxhall but im living the Sweeney dream so .... SHUT IT! Quarter-Life-Crisis
The truth is - i've been after a Sweeney car of this type for about 10 years, even considered getting any mk1 granada and converting it to a Regan-mobil myself. I've been after this particular car for about 2 years, unfortunately it was finally offered to me at the wrong time. I had nowhere to keep it, money was getting a bit short, the Granada clubs (yes club's) are not particularly great, especially when compared to this one. But ... The oportunity was just too great to miss. I got a small loan, found a empty garage nearby, found a german site that still sells mk1 parts new (just about every part to build one from just parts), There is an independant Ford specialist in Lincoln also. I went to see it and it turns out to be a mid 1977 car, so it was built in Cologne by enthusiastic work consious german makers rather than at Daggenham by a load of work-shy striking essex wideboys who'd be a bit sparing on the paint and underseal. It needs a few bits doing bodywise (door bottoms and rear arch) but is solid underneath, puts the manta to shame really. One of the previous owners uprated the velour interior to that of a mk2 leather interior, and although cracked and split in places its like sitting in your favourite armchair. The Essex V6 is direct drive also so no cambelt to worry about. Myself and her indoors are planning on moving within a year so hopefully i'll eventually end up with at least a double garage for the Granada and Manta and at most i'll be able to build a workshop down the bottom of the garden if we get the right house. Must nip out to get a lottery ticket to fund these dreams. I didn't give me the same buzz as when my manta arrived, but i am really pleased with it, its obviously in total contrast to the manta in every way but i think its a good thing, the manta is for the days i want a manual loud machine and the granada is for the wafting in luxury days. Some extra pictures below, note the 8-track which works and im keeping. Granada has radio 8-track with two crackly speakers giving out 40 watts and the Manta has a sony CD auto-changer with four speakers giving out nearly 1500 watts. Christ
[8D]that looks so cool.... ....from the outside - the inside is another matter beige plastic FTW[] it would have to be one hell of an interesting drive to take my mind off that interior
d818anr
dont remove the 8 track, that is pure class! If you have to fit a modern stereo hide it away, that thing HAS to stay! Joe
Let me just correct one of your sentences Dave (you got the words in the wrong order): "Myself and her indoors are planning on moving within a year so hopefully I'll eventually end up with at least a double garage for the Granada and Manta and at most I'll be able to build a house down the bottom of the garden if we get the right workshop." Rick-Manta
Nice, at least if you come to sell it on it should appreciate in value. How much did it set you back, if you don't mind me asking? I too agree on keeping the 8 track, though you could replace the speakers with some good quality ones that are the same size so they'll hide away behind the original speaker cover. MrCarlos
I thought exactly the same thing about the timing gear drive cog MantaMad - this engine will be so affected if my memory serves me well. You can get steel replacements which weren't so bad to fit IIRC but noisier. Quarter-Life-Crisis
Thanks everyone, the cream plastic isn't as horrid as it may seem. There is no way im getting rid of the 8 track, its what Wayne Hemmingway calls "retro kitch" I may bring it to the meet in october, its safely locked away hidden in a friends garage now. I changed the 2 spotlights at the front this afternoon, i was sorry to lose the original ford items, but one was cracked and rusty and halfords do a replacement set for £20, No chrome but it doesn't look out of place at all, except to a ford anorak. I got a £2K loan from the bank and i paid £1850 for it - 10 months MOT and 6 month Tax, and the insurance is a very reasonable £164. I was offered £3500 while it was at the garage the other day. Not selling though! when you get a car you've been waiting for you're not going to sell it after a week and a half are you? You know where i am Steve, welcome anytime. As are most people, there's a club only a short walk away. (social club - not night-club) I'll see if i can get a replacement timing gear, however i dont race or thrash the Granada so its not strained in any way.
