Just become a Manta owner again after 32 years

Recommended Posts

How does one upload pictures? My first Manta was a coupe, so I'm now in both camps,  Would have liked another, but was hard to find one. Happy with the hatch. I've never seen a hatch as a rally car though, which is why I hankered after the first one. Used to watch the Lombard  RAC a lot back in the day. The first Manta I had was 8years old when I had it and the rear sills had rusted out by then, so swapped it for an Astra 🫣. This one is fantastic underneath, very happy. Now need to preserve it and get the garage cleared out for its new home.

Yeah I think uploading photos is a member only option. It’s early days yet but being a club member has a lot of benefits that folk tend not to see. For example, we have a deal going with CVI insurance. I renewed my manta insurance and added a 1986 Carlton 2.2 for an extra tenner. The saving on that has payed for my membership for the next 10 years!

but yeah, love a hatch.. they handle fine and are practical at the same time!

Good luck with the restoration , I wish I had the facilties to do the same having owned a gte coupe and a 1.8 sports hatch in the late 80s, have an empty garage and some funds but need something  roadworthy for shows and weekend drives.

There are a few belters on Ebay but you need ridiculously deep pockets. There is the gold hatch but it needs LPG removal and seems to have passed hands a few times and of course is double what it is probably worth.

Okay, I have a a picture now after the car now being roadworthy and being able to drive 'her' to her new home. 7 months after first picking her up, from Mathewsons.

Full brake system overhaul. Reconditioned the calipers, replaced rear cylinders. New coppers pipes where needed. Reconditioned ATE master cylinder, new internals from a BMW e21, and restored the servo after master cylinder had leaked.

Engine flushed out, sorted overheating. Timing was out by a tooth on distributer.

Replaced gearbox output seal and oil, replaced diff gasket and oil. No more leaks 😉

Excellent that you have her back on the road , well done.

I've been slowly recommissioning an '84 hatch over the last couple of years too after having a B reg Hatch back in the early 90's. So many of the 1.8's met their maker getting stripped for parts for XE conversions, the ones that are left are definitely worth saving as they are so rare.

And - Sutty is quite correct in that Hatches are so much better!
