1.8 Barn Find

Recommended Posts

When it doesn't sell on an open auction for £2k, I doubt he'll realise that proves that it's not worth £2k! It makes me wonder why some folk don't do a bit of research first, maybe even ask a question on here and a bit of advise on selling a manta, we would at least point out that a 1.8 coupe is a rare find now, but this is 'total restoration' and worth no more than it's parts value plus weight in mild steel.

I think some people get a touch of Escort disease where any condition of one is apparently worth a fortune even if it's not even good enough to keep hens in! :)

Our area rep Martin Meadon went & had a look at this car today, here is what he emailed to us about the car.

Hi Guys, I called into Chepstow this morning to look at the above, it's a 1.8 with a solid, (non-sun) roof. It has been stored in a garage for the last 12 years and has a rear screen sticker for, (either the original supplier or where it was bought second hand), 'Racecourse Garage' with Chepstow area phone number.
It has just over 24k on the speedo, that I couldn't authenticate, but with the drivers seat bolster worn through I'd say it has a 1 in front of it, 124k in about 16 years?
The roof and nose cone showed no signs of rust along with minor areas to the bonnet and boot lid.
Areas of rust were noted to the bottom of the drivers windscreen A pilar & rear n/s rear screen C pilar.
Under the bonnet, minor areas of rust to the rear of the headlight areas and inner wings. Along the top of the n/s inner wing and wing mounting flange, about 60%, the o/s about 45%. Battery and windscreen washer trays looked ok as did the chassis rails.
The engine started ok from cold but the ignition switch has been bye passed as it had jammed, the key wouldn't open the boot but from underneath looked solid as did the inner arches, outer arch edges were shot as were both outer cills. Cill rear ends to the inner arches had minor rust with rust along the bottom of both doors.
Both floor pans looked good from underneath with solid underseal but will probably have rust holes at their cill joints, the jacking points were rusty. From inside the seat frame to floor areas were solid as was the area of the chassis number. I couldnt get the back seat out to look at the rear floorand arches from inside.
The bottom of the chassis rails were shot at the bend to the floor, the bulkhead to both front wheel arches looked good to me but when the underseal is stripped off around the edges/joints who knows.
It'll make a good rally car or 400 replica in the right hands with deep pockets or a concourse car for someone with deeper pockets.

Cheers, Martin Meadon,

South Wales & West Area OMOC Rep.

Well he got his 2 grand plus 500 pound for whatever. yes its a coupe and an 1800 one at that . it will most probably not be restored to an original 1800 spec or retain its 1800 engine. but I guess its up to whoever bought it to do what they think fit I suppose. just seems very expensive to me.

Just looked at the bidding history, from £840 straight up to £2500,could be moody bidding ! We all know what eBay is like

I guess we will never know if it actually sold for £2500

As you say rob all the bits there for xe conversion so that's £400/500 of it !

Heh heh! No way in this world did that ever sell for £2500! The reserve would have had to have been set at that too for it to jump from £840! This happens a lot as an attempt for the seller to push the bids up but that's quite a jump and very unrealistic. You'll find this sale will get 'mutually withdrawn' to save the seller having to pay the fees!

So this car is worth £840 to someone, that's pretty good and if the seller did ever think to be sensible, then it would be nice to see a 1.8S coupe done up to near original as there are so few about.
