Ebay: Gold 84B 1.8S Berlinetta hatch for sale

Recommended Posts

Looks like a great project car there for someone. Doesn't need a great deal dong to it to get it back on the road by the looks of things.
Shame it has the 'orrible interior though, but it looks in quite decent condition. There are not many of these about now, as they weren't the most popular colour/interior choice.

Wasn't someone looking for a hatchback project only recently ?

11 months MOT, so it shouldn't be a rotter and just the external panels that got the tin worm. I wonder what the MOT history is. Odd that they used an electric fuel pump setup like that with the mechanical one still in place. Plus they didn't really mention much about it, other than it having a "new" one.

Reminds me of Ian Virco's 1.8 that he always brought to the shows. I think his had the beige interior but with the black centre stripes on the seats, so it toned it all down a bit.

It's had a few corrosion issues both front & rear over the last 15 years unsurprisingly.

It certainly reminded me of Ian's Gold 1.8 Hatch too, probably why it stuck out (and the fact that it is quite local to me).

Ian's had the full black interior, with the matching charcoal door cards, and standard grey dash so it didn't look too bad. It was quite unusual with that colour combination as usually the gold cars had the beige interior as standard.

Looks pretty good to me, I think the colour suits it although the younger me would never have said that 🙄

Never had a 1.8, how do people find them v the 2.0?

I can see it being another red top candidate but it would be nice to keep it original.

Totally Agree. I turned down a really nice Gold GT/E Hatch back in the early 90's purely on the basis of the colour (and the 'orrible beige dash and seats).

Personally I love the 1.8 and had several as daily drivers. They obviously don't have the lovely burble of the CIH but they are revvy, easy to work on and deliver some good low end torque. I did some mild tuning to several that I had (Kent Cam / bigger valves / Vernier / Weber conversion / Better exhaust etc) and they would easily outpull a standard GTE. Probably why they didn't go any further with the engine options as it would have been quicker than the ranger topper at the time.

It would be a real shame if this did go down the Red Top route. There arent very many 1.8's left anymore so we need to cherish and save them all!!!!!

I feel I ought to confess to being slightly biased on the topic.......as I am the current owner of Mr Virco's Gold Hatch. 34k original miles and im only the 3rd registered keeper.
I've had it a couple of years now but it was a bit of an impulse buy......I just couldn't say no, especially as it is a well known car in the club.

A couple of photos from when my gold hatch needed some love up to present day. I think Gold Cars certainly look better now than back in the day. I wouldn't of been seen dead driving a gold Manta in 1989.....perhaps my tastes have grown old, along with the rest of me.

I think gold cars were ok in the day, used to have an ‘83 gold Berlinetta coupe. Had a great trip camping on the NC500 in it, never went dark though which is a pain when you’re sleeping in a tent.

A factory XE Manta probably would have outperformed a 2.8 Capri or XR4i but maybe it would have encroached on the Monza’s market and the Manta was a thing of the past for the upcoming marketeers A 2.0 8v 130 Family 2 would have been nice though.

Ah, nice! I wondered where Ian's hatch ended up as I remember when it was advertised and there wasn't any posts about it from the new owner or seller after. I'm glad it didn't end up with a dealer flipping it thinking it's worth exclusive coupe money like there was a lot of at the time.

I've seen the Vircomobile over 10 times, but couldn't recall the black interior.. must have been all the other beige ones I've seen in between. Coincidentally, I was talking about all the Vauxhall/Opel metallic paints with someone the other day and had a theory that so many were offered because Ford couldn't do a decent metallic paint for a long time (it used to flake off after a couple of years in the sun) so they were showing off bronze, silver, gold, platinum.. like I say just a theory; it could well have been the German's odd taste.

Yes, that's exactly what I was worried about. We have seen too many club cars end up on the Dealer merry go round so I grabbed it and have spent the last year or two getting it back up to a nice standard.....which I think is where I am at the moment. Still quite a few little jobs to do but so far it has been a pleasure to work on as everything has come apart easily and nothing has broken (so far). Its probably about time that I put a bit of a build thread together, I have quite a few photos!

Went for good money in the end. 5600 for a Project hatch.

Yeah, seems the Hatch is starting to get the value it deserves indeed. Once restored though, might be a different case with asking what it should be worth as to what buyers out there are prepared to pay. It’s like the Mk2 escort of 2Door shell v 4door I guess.

With the upcoming 40 year tax free thing approaching, they’ll be worth more once tax exempt. Mines got 4 years left until then, and it couldn’t come quick enough. Sick of paying tax on a car I hardly use!

Go monthly, and then you can SORN online. Takes seconds now
