I was at Retrropower on Weds when the paint was going on the car, but had some sub contract work to finish off on Thurs and Fri, but knew I'd be back over onSat to see the painted article in all it's glory, and was gonna come on here all smug and gloating that I'd seen it in the flesh/steel........

B4stard it was all being mopped down, with any leading adges masked to stop intrusion of polishing compound and 2 people working on it, so just come on here to look at the piccies that everyone else has seen :unsure::huh:;):PB):)

Nice :D

What type of paint did you use? (and colour shade). How many coats?

Cheers,

Keith

Helios Solvent Base Coat in Polar White, (this is built up gradually in lots of light coats, so can't really say exact numbers, but it took 9 litres) followed by a 2k Clear Lacquer - one light 'grip' coat followed by 2 heavy coats.

pics are a bit rubbish really as it was getting dark, but was dying to get a few shots!!

That looks fantastic!

2k lacquer over the white is great and looks flat as fook, don't tell me you got that finish 'off the gun'?

If so, what gun are you using and are you HVLP?

Cheers

Kev

Hi Kev, the pics where the masking is still on and the car is in the booth are before flatting, straight from the gun, and the pics taken outside with the masking off are after flatting and compounding. Engine bay, bumpers etc are as from the gun.

Gun is a Devilbiss GTI Pro, not HVLP. Great gun apparently (its Cal that painted it and its Nat writing this! )

The floor extraction in the new booth helps, there is no mist in there whatsoever while painting!

cheers

Nat

Thought I would do the honours for Retro as they are soooo busy................And dog thought it was a good time to get up! Barking at 5.50am! Mind you he aint well at the mo...........

More progress!

Next move is to prepare the rear axle. We are using a Salisbury 4HA unit, with a custom made full 5-link setup designed along similar lines to the original 400 rally cars. The first job is to strip the axle, and remove the old brackets, and also strip down the LSD donor (Jaguar diff with Dana LSD).

The casing is then checked for straightness with a laser.

Thankfully it's dead straight, so it's on with the new brackets.

Moving on to slightly less heavy duty work, the MK1 Escort Bias pedal box is fitted and the steering column converted to accept the Corsa electric power assistance setup. The pedal box was chosen as it is bulkhead mounted, but keeps the cylinders inside the car, thus allowing a super-clean engine bay and no clearance issues with the throttle bodies.

Next a bespoke heater box arrangment is being designed to give a clean underbonnet look, and extra clearance to the back of the engine. A slim heater matrix with an integral valve is mounted to the bulkhead along with a Yamaha R6 engine cooling fan (5.5" and very powerful!). A bespoke box is then made up (thanks Clive!) and engraved with the '400' logo before being painted and fitted. A stainless plate is also made and fitted over the bulkhead where the servo would originally have sat.

Are you doing the upholstery yourself? I'm halfway through my seats. Not nearly as hard as I thought (though I'm still to see if the finished product looks good, but so far the bases look pretty decent.)

No! The seats are at the upholsterer who is 5 mins away from Retropower !

A guy over on Total Opel has had his done with the blitz fabric . See below
